'8 is enough': Hatton/Pacquiao - Who has the edge after round 9?

As the highly anticipated May 2nd showdown between Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao approaches, the questions, predictions, and subplots continue to mount like there's no tomorrow. Among the many equations being tossed around is one that may very likely predict the final outcome.

Some feel there's no need to question what will happen in the later rounds because it probably won't go that far, however, the more I think of the two men involved, the more inclined I am to lean towards that frame of the fight - (aptly dubbed the championship rounds) - as I see it being perhaps the most critical.

Under the tutelage of Floyd Mayweather Sr., Hatton has appeared better conditioned and a lot more skilled in the execution of his game-plan which has helped him to preserve energy for a stretch run that typically finds him gassed out.

It'll take that type of energy conservation to even give him a chance when things really get heated late in the fight, for that's when Manny Pacquiao will undoubtedly be at his peak point.

Breaking things down on paper it appears pretty even for the late rounds with Ricky Hatton going 11-1 beyond the ninth round in his career and Manny Pacquiao 10-1 in that same frame, but as we've learned, paper burns.

How will Pacquiao's body hold up from the severe banging to the ribs that Ricky Hatton will definitely hone in on? How will Hatton hold up from the staggering power shots that managed to halt the legendary Oscar De La Hoya after only 8 rounds? Some think conventional logic points to a short night, but I just can't follow that train of thought. If it were that easy to dissect, the fight wouldn't be happening.

When it all boils down, this is either mans fight to win or lose, and both men stand a helluva chance. Yes, Hatton can be beaten, and despite it not happening in recent times, the great Manny Pacquiao can lose as well.

I'm not quite sure how it'll all unfold, but one thing for sure, when it's time to play for all the marbles and the fight itself is hanging in the balance, one of these two men will step up big and seize the moment. History indicates that they're both capable, but as we all know, in the end there can only be one!

Stay tuned.

this fight is not about hanging on for twelve rounds if it goes that way. manny has shown he can go twelve rounds without let up. if hatton eased up between round 1 and 12 he is done for.
it is not his choice but manny

there's no doubt hatton has improved his skills under the new trainer but he's still a one-dimensional fighter (he keeps on coming forward). he can't much pacquiao's training regimen (believe me), nobody had. he'll just be banged out in the later rounds.

If it should go the distance, then the best man wins. KO is the best chance to prove if who has the power. KO @ 9 by the PACMAN.

believe me.manny wont fight within hattons range.as hatton have shorter reach he cannot connect those body shots. and pac would fight using his range with right and left hooks. yes it would be frustrating for hatton if he would be technical,he is not accustomed in fighting long range,so hes best chance is to struggle his way in and fight in his own brawl style.

This fight will end in a bloody and brutal fashion to the guy that will not listen to his coach. On another note, it'll be nice to see Roach and Mayweather go at it for fun. I'll bet for Roach to knock out Sr with his Parkinson-powered combination.

The key for Hatton to win this fight is to rebirth to his old style. He should be named as "Hugman" because he hug more than he hit, that's why Kostya Szu gave up. It's like fighting a bear, Szu drained him self escaping from the strategy. Another style he is excellent with is the "head on your face" technique. It seems effective against Szu, It's all Mayweather avoided from him. that way he can't be as popular as Pacquaio. By the way your assessment is very balance, like mine. . .

There's so many things uncertain that of course will be answered fight time.
Can Hatton catch MP with consistent body blows that would slow down MP? MP is not known as a defensive fighter but of late has shown excellent movement to escape and block attacks.
Will the size advantage for Hatton be really an advantage? If it slows him dowm then thats trouble. If he can harass, wrestle and push MP around then this might distrupt MP some. How will MP react with this style? There aren't a lot of this types that MP has encountered before. The late and dirty fighter Agapito Sanchez probably was the roughest one that MP faced. And MP wasn't overwhelming him - but that was eons ago of course.

for me hatton is not convincingly good with his last fight against malignaggi.. with malignaggi almost using only one hand on the entire fight and yet fight reaches almost to the end w/o knocking his opponent, i can see this fight is done for pacquiao..

Hatton will be send to dreamland....

remember PBF kills this guy with the laft hook that makes hatton bangs his head in the corner post....

AND Pacman is a left HAND fighter that can throw a power left hooks that will kill hatton in any round of the fight.

if hatton plays defensive it will be like manny vs barrera II. the fight will last untill 12 rounds. i think hatton will have a better chance this way...just waiting for manny to submit and make mistakes.

The Pacman, as he demonstrated in Pacman vs. Dela Hoya fight, was lethal at Welterweight. The Pacman would be in his most lethal form at Light Welterweight (his present ideal fighting weight). There is no doubt in our mind that he will win this fight against Hatton by stoppage.

Manny is too focused on how much he should be making from the broadcasters. He will come up short because he will still be thinking how much he should be making from the fight.
