Winky signs a few autographs for "fans" (Hogan Photos)
Paul Williams and Ronald "Winky" Wright made their Las Vegas arrival this afternoon for a Saturday middleweight clash. The match-up is a fight fan's fight, but I doubt they will be hanging from the rafters for two premiere, but largely unheralded boxers.
Fight photographer Tom Hogan released the above photo to medial outlets, but I wonder who these individuals surrounding Wright might be?
Poor souls straight from the local unemployment office offered a few bucks by Golden Boy and Goossen Tutor -- promoters of this bout -- to paint an aurora of popular clamor ffor the fight?
Or maybe there are some sick, very sick, boxing fans who will rush the lobby of Mandalay Bay on a Wednesday afternoon to get autographs?
Bottom line is that tickets are not moving quickly at the box office. The approximately 12,000 seat arena has plenty of tickets available, from the nose bleeds down to the floor seats; ranging from $50 to $300.
During tough times who is going to shell $50, plus parking, and other expenses such as drinks and food, to watch a fight which is being presented on HBO for the price of a monthly subscription or visit to a friend's house?
Yes, the fight should be interesting, as both Wright and Williams are skilled and aggressive, but the under card consists of a heavyweight bout between rising Chris Arreola and retread Jameel McCline, and a littering of one-sided match-ups used to builed the records of prospects such as Shawn Estrada, and Danny Garcia.
Basically a prime main course surrounded by Campbell's Tomato Soup, some Nabisco Saltines, and a Twinkie.
Stay at home and watch a true gladiator, Paul Williams, battle one of the most underrated fighters of our time, Winky Wright, and let promoters know that the trip to Vegas is hard during an economic downturn, especially when they lack the vision to make a card an action filled event from top to bottom.
