Paul Williams open to Pacquiao or Mayweather clash

"The Punisher" could be a nightmare for any welterweight (Source: Ruhe/Getty)

With the first cracks in the foundation of a much anticipated bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather appearing today in the boxing media, another welterweight - of sorts - threw his hat into the Mayweather - Pacquiao derby last night.

During an appearance on The Boxing Truth Radio, Paul "The Punisher" Williams made it very clear that though his Saturday night fight with Sergio Martinez is at a weight of 160 pounds, he can 1) make the 147 pound limit to once again fight as a welterweight and 2) is open to fighting both Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

With trainer Freddie Roach announcing today that Manny Pacquiao may go for an 8th meaningless title in an 8th convoluted division against Yuri Foreman - an idea which I floated the very night of Pacquiao's impressive lashing of Miguel Cotto - and reports of Pacquiao more interested in running for Congress in his native land than boxing, one of the most lucrative bouts in the last ten years has started to look more like pie in the sky than meat and potatoes.

Meanwhile, a man who vagabonds between 147 pounds and 160, with no true home and no big boxing names calling him outs, looks to keep his options open.

Will Floyd or Manny fight the 6'1" freak of nature from Aiken, South Carolina?  Not likely, as Williams presents a challenge few could over come, much less men who originally patrolled the super featherweight division.

Remember, before Shane Mosley and the case of the plastered mitts, Williams tamed a once ferocious lion called Margarito.

Williams vs. Pacquiao, or Mayweather is the stuff of barber shop discussion from South Los Angeles to Harlem, New York - a useless but entertaining discussion in what could be, but it is nice to hear a modern boxer open to fighting anyone, anywhere and truly mean it.

I would say Paul Williams is the greatest pound for pound boxer because he could beat both Mayweather and Pacquiao easily.

using your logic Sphynx, then maybe Vitali, Wladimir, or even Valuev should be the best pound for pound....

..I'm pretty sure they could beat Pac and Mayweather easily too..

Paul Williams should belong to middleweight and not welterweight because of his built even though he can attain that 147lb. weight

If Williams can shave off the weight to make 147 in a healthy manner and then defeat Pacquiao or Mayweather, he deserves the title of pound for pound best.

For now, I just appreciate the fact he can move up and down in weight - a true freak of nature.

Paul Williams you are one funny guy! While Pacquiao is making his legacy by climbing up in weight and fighting bigger guys... YOU a 6'1 or even a 6'2 giant wants to fight 5'6 guy.
How about do the feats that Pacquiao did! Climb up in weights and fight bigger guys!
YOU WANT TO FIGHT PACQUIAO ONLY SHOWS YOU WANT THE BIG PAY CHECK! FIGHT THE MIDDLE WEIGHT GUYS AND SHOW THEM WHAT YOU GOT!
SHOW THE WORLD THAT YOU ARE REALLY THE MOST FEARED MAN IN BOXING!
DONT PICK ON THE LITTLE GUYS!

it is hard for pacman to fight the punisher, the physical features of williams is quite obvious enough for any fighters to avoid, how much more f pac who stands only nearly 5"7... mayweather is the only thing left for pacman.. not mosley coz he is old, and to avoid excuses if mosley gets beaten by pac, much better not to call that fight...

Paul Williams only has Margarito, a slow fighter. Pacman vs Williams will be like Sugar Ray Leonard vs Hearns. All Pacman needs to do is tire out a drained Williams at 147, and finish it in the later rounds. Sugar Ray Leonard already has shown the blueprint.

Paul Williams' body has matured just as pac's body. Pac has gone up on weight to fight bigger foes. Paul should go up in weight division, he does not have much in the table to offer someone like pac or floyd.

I am an avid huge fan of Pacquaio. If Manny really wanted to be considered as a real welter weight & NOT just for the records then maybe it is about time that He defended the weight class. No doubt about what Pacquaio has accomplished. He is truly a world's Best but still boxing is boxing. Likewise to Mayweather. if they are truly the best in welterweight the they need to fight whoever is the most fierce in the world. I think both Mayweather & pacquiao should fight Paul William in a legitimate 147lbs welter weight bout. No catch weight.

This topic makes a good conversation in coffee shops, barber shops, laundry etc.. BUT not to be taken seriously. Pacman is not STUPID. He is brave but not an idiot. This is what they call the fantasy fight much like a fantasy football pool. Paul is too big to be a welter he should just stay in the higher divisions and wait for his oppurtunity to land a big fight with the cash cow up there. Let's all be realistic here.

I agree to the other poster here who said Williams should go look for fights in the higher weight class and not down in the welterweights. Why dont he go up to the super middleweight where he truly belongs, challenging Pacquiao or Mosley or Maywether at welterweight wouldn't do anything for P.Williams career. WHo is going to be impress if he beat up guys who is 3 feet shorter than he is??? I think this is Paul Willams is scared to go up his real weight class because he knows his tap-tap boxing style will be exposed there. I wonder what Arthur Abraham would do to P. Williams if he ever make that jump. As for him fighting Pacquiao..if I was to advice Manny I'd say fight him at the Jr. Welterweight 140lbs and see how Williams handle speed and power of PACMAN.

And also don't be fooled that no one wants to fight Paul Williams because of his godlike boxing skills.....No WAY ! Paul Williams wont get the fight because the big promoters in boxing wouldn't want to share the pie to Williams current promoter. Golden Boy and Top Rank knew that if they give Williams the break and he makes it big then that would be millions those two big promotion companies would not be making. People...this here is just all about business and being on top and remaining there at all cost. The Lions wouldn't want to share their catch with the hyenas same as ODLH and Bob Arum wouldn't want to share theirs with the DiBellas, Gary Shaws and all the other promoters out there that is just trying to also join the party at the top floor. Paul should drop his current managers and join either Top Rank or GB Promotions, then and only then he'll see the fights he dreams of fighting coming true. No one is scared of P.Will just don't want him to grow big outside of the big farms.

If the Pacman were not just a 5'6" natural junior welterweight going up against a 6'2" natural middleweight Punisher, I would really want this fight to happen rather than a probably boring Pacman-Moneyman match. However, the Pacman is getting on in years too; if the Pacman has the same savvy and muscle mass today four years ago when he can really push his physical capacities to the limit, this match would be monumental. You can't get into a more Biblical struggle than the Pacman-Punisher fight. Sadly, the Punisher would be too young and too heavy at fight night for him today.

    1. High risk but no gain.
