It was announced today by Golden Boy Promotions that Floyd Mayweather would be pullinf out of his scheduled July 18 fight with Juan Manuel Marquez.
"I am extremely disappointed that this fight has to be postponed," said Mayweather. "I was training very hard and looking forward to getting back in the ring on July 18th."
Funny, an injured rib is much harder to verify than a broken hand or torn ligament. The ambiguity of Floyd's injury timed with a recent report of Bob Arum's willingness to split the purse 50-50 for a future fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao makes me think Floyd became injured to go directly to a fight with the Filipino.
Sure Floyd was favored to beat Marquez -- a man coming up to fight as a welterweight for the first time -- but the Mexican ring technician was no walk in the park tune-up.
Look for Floyd to skip past Marquez, with no re-scheduling, and fight Manny Pacquiao during November, 2009.
Pacquiao Would Whip Cotto?
My column yesterday caused a handful of Manny-Maniacs to tell me that their idol could whip Miguel Cotto based on the Puerto Rican's performances against Antonio Margarito and Joshua Clottey.
Don't get it twisted my Filipino friends, Manny is one for the ages, but Cotto was being challenged by legitimate welterweights, not souped up featherweights.. Manny does not have the physicality to over power Cotto in the manner that Clottey and Margarito were able to. Not to say that Manny could not when, but Cotto vs. Pacquiao would be an even ordeal -- at best!

I think Floyd and GBP are just making up the rib-injury....Since the fight is not gaining attraction, they know they would be hard put in the negotiating table for the fight with Pacquiao even if Floyd wins it convincingly.

Cotto and Pacquiao will be a good showing of Power vs Speed. Yeah Cotto is a big contender for pacquiao but I did notice that Cotto has gotten slower. His power is still there though I think it would not be as much of a risk for pacquiao. Pacquiao on the other hand, will use his speed against cotto. I don't think Cotto hasn't face anybody faster than Pacquiao. Mosley has fast hands but never really utilize the ring the way pacquiao does whenever he fights. The question is, does Pacquiao have the power to hurt Cotto? Answer is YES because Cotto has been decked before by lesser opponents and with Pacquiao's punches coming from different angles and combined with speed and power, I think it would be enough to give cotto problems. I do believe that if Pacquiao gives Cotto problems, I see Cotto low blowing Pacquiao and rabbit punching him. Also I would suggest the fight take place somewhere else besides at the Madison Square garden because common... 116-111?

The Pacman has a truly different style that befuddles opponents. He does not fight out of the book. He fights to maim and neutralize. His mentality is not to survive or win points for the whole evening. Most boxers are waiting for their opponents to make mistakes and jump on them when they are off their guards. I can't recall Pacman winning a major fight by a lucky punch. Almost all his knockouts were deliberate and pressured on the opponents. They were completely on their guard when the barrage commenced.
Fans loves Pacman because he simulates a fight, a survival fight. When he box, fans do not see a boxing match, a sport...they see a fight, a tamed street fight. Now that's interesting!
With this style, he will dominate Cotto.
Seeing Manny in list recent 2 fights I think he can easily evade the punches of cotto. I just hope Manny will not be careless during his boxing dance with cotto because cotto has considerable knockout power and a legitimate welterweight. Sorry for the double post. I have to comment on your reffering to Manny as a "souped up featherweight." He started at 10 as an amateur, doing 60+ fights losing about 2. Manny started professionally at flyweight at an illegitimate age of 16. He has to lie about his age. You have to know the physical conditions of rural male Filipinos before talking about their weight. A rural Filipino at 125 lbs carries 2 sacks of rice on a daily basis. That's 100 kg, 220 lbs. That's why most Filipino boxers hail from rural areas.
Manny has been suppressing his weight since he was 16, look at his defined muscles during weigh-in. I think he can hold his own comfortably at 147 lb. At 16 he weighed 106 lb, it would be safe to expect at 30, that's almost twice his age when he started, that he can be comfortable at 147 lbs. That's a gain of about 3 lbs per year.
I think this is another excuse of Mayweather, I think he's scared of PACMAN. His next excuse , he's not going to fight anymore. He's afraid Manny will grab his belt.
I'll tell you the truth, I'm a fan of both Paquiao and Cotto. But I think that in the 147 lbs division, Cotto has the edge. Let's take a look at the Paquiao vs. De la Hoya fight. De la Hoya can not be call a good boxer anymore, he has lost his strenght and speed, and he still manage to last Paquiao for 10 rounds, and Manny never KO'd him, Oscar just stop the fight. Meaning that Paquiao hasn't yet stablished himself in the 147 division. Paquiao couldn't KO Oscar because hhe lost power going in the 147 division, that's why he wants Cotto to go down in weight class. He knows is going to be very difficult to stop a 147 power hitter like Cotto (very difficult, but not impossible). It's very unlikely that Manny can KO Cotto,, the only way i see Manny winning is by decision on 12 rounds. Also remember that Cotto is a boxer of quality, he's a smart, power puncher kind of fighter.
Cotto has been rocked by jr. welter weights, he has trouble fighting south paws and fighters who are fast. he also leaves himself open at times. Manny has the power to KO Cotto but this will be difficult. Freddie Roach will again create a plan that will definitely exploit Cotto's weakness. This fight is tough for Manny but he have the heart, the power and the speed to beat a true welter weight like Cotto.

Gayweather postpone the fight intentionaly becuz as of today he still not get in shape and still overweight(floyd weighs 155lbs. at present), he needs more time to get to the contractual weight(144) and find it difficult so they must have to do an excuse to at least re schedule the fight to give more time to shed off...got it???
