Cotto - Pacquiao mailbag: round one

A day at the beach for Pacman
My hate of Manny Pacquiao is legendary among those Manny-Maniacs who see only white or black when it comes to their idol.  So when it was announced that Manny will be fighting Miguel Cotto on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada and I had the nerve to report on the scheduled bout, Pacquiao's idolaters came out of their caverns to sling comments and e-mails at me.

Here are my responses to a few...enjoy.

So will you predict a crackhead wobble, wobble this times? - Urbino

I am not the only person who predicted Pacquiao to beat Oscar De La Hoya, my error was to predict De La Hoya would make Pacquiao do a Zab Judah inspired knockout strut inside the ring and boy, I have never lived it down.  This fight will be close and tough to predict, but I will leave my prediction for the week before the fight.  But, really, the worst thing I could do for Pacquiao Nation is to pick the Pinoy as I seem to have a kiss of death when it comes to picking fights.

Mr. Lois, would you care to give us your prediction on the fight? - joebentvice

I predict PAIN, for now.

Where will you be watching Manny beat your countryman? - Tremblethembones

Man, let us get is straight.  I am CUBAN-AMERICAN.  First when Manny was mowing down Mexicans, I was Mexican.  Now that he has cross-hairs on Cotto, I am Puerto Rican.  Get it straight!  But Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Filipinos are all connect by their Spanish blood and love for LECHON!

Why such an issue when PACMAN wants to fight Cotto in 143lbs. Anti-pacman will say that is a Pacquiao advantage. What they didn't see is Manny need to gain more weight than Cotto needs to lose. - Pinoyako

Well the issue is that Cotto is settled in as a welterweight and anytime you need to come down in weight, that is not good for a boxer - in general.  Remember 2006 was the last time Cotto fought as a junior welter and he had trouble making weight and he was looking weak in the ring.  Manny does not HAVE to gain the weight to fight at 145, he can come in at 130 if he wants to.  Face it, Cotto shedding weight is an advantage for Manny.

Miguel has already a power punch, all he needs now is to tighten his defense. - George

Yeah, too bad tightening your defense is not an over-night or three month process.  Keep in mind, Cotto just changed trainers his last fight and was getting hit so cleanly by Joshua Clottey's predictable right-hand that it was damn near embarrassing.  Also keep in mind that Manny is a lefty and Cotto had his issues against another fast and powerful southpaw in Zab Judah.

I am sure we will have more of these scintillating mailbags as the big fight gets closer and closer...

I am a Pacman fan and i'd love to know how you think the fight would end.

I think it's giving too much respect for Pacquaio and forgetting Cotto's achievements when people predict that Pacquiao would just walk over Cotto. Cotto's win over Clottey may not be impressive and he did get hit too many times. But remember that prior to the cut (which was caused by a headbutt), Clottey was knocked down. If Cotto wasn't cut, the fight may not have been as close.

Pacquiao on the other hand is small. Much smaller than Clottey and Cotto even if Cotto comes in a pound lower than his previous fight (Cotto was 146 at weigh in). While much has been said about Pacquiao able to bring his power when he goes up in weight, remember that ODLH didnt' fall even after a barrage of punches from Packy. Oldie La Hoya remeber was a dehydrated and shot fighter at 147. I don't think we would be able to say that about Cotto on fight night.

Tingaling, oskee was not dehydrated when he fought Pacquiao! always remember that and don't believe what the haters always say. now if Cotto gets KOd, they will also say he's dehydrated! yes dehydrated by 1 lousy pound! Oscar will not fight at 147 if he knew he will be dehydrated! Oscar is no dumb!!!!! look at Cotto he knew he will have problems at 144-143 so he didn't take it.

ODLH and Hatton were far better than Cotto. Cotto would be an easy, easy foe for Manny. Manny's arsenal is too much for Cotto to handle.

im a pacfan and a paella lover who grew up watching him (and cebuano Suico) grew in the ring too since day 1. but boy,i never thought of him fighting Cotto, the only other fighter i admire during my era. this should be a good one win or lose.People have spent so much time commenting on how big fighters tend to get dehydrated when they lose pounds. just the same,i hope you won't fail to comment on how small ones tend to lose speed and power when they go up in weight. While Pacquiao had not shown loss in speed in power when he fought at welter and junior welter, not all boxers can do that. That's what makes him special. If it was some other small boxer, none would even bother to comment on the weight issue. And although Pacquiao has shown he can compete with natural bigger men, that doesnt mean it is fair.He is still the smaller end.He is the one giving concession. The only reason why a 145 or 147 makes sense is because it is a title fight,he is the one aiming for his 7th weight class belt.

Is it true that pacquiao-cotto fight is a none title bout?

    Mr Lois,

Even though the fight is at 145 lbs, where do you think Pacquiao will be rated at welterweight if he is to beat Cotto convincingly?

And if Floyd Jr gets the job done with Marquez, and Pacquiao defeats Cotto. Could a Mayweather-Pacquiao match-up be considered a fight for "THE WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP" with the The Ring belt on the line???
Since Mayweather is the former Lineal Welterweight Champ and no one has really assumed that title when he retired.

By the way I consider WBA champ Shane Mosley as the #1 welterweight but not as the lineal champion, because Margarito was not the lineal champion either when they fought. When Cotto-Margarito fought it was only for the WBA title. Floyd had just retired then, leaving the lineal title vacant up until now. Plus you can make a case for Cotto having beaten Mosley also, so that's another loose end.

Also, I'm a big fan of your TheBoxingTruth radio show with John Chavez.

    Peace,
    Nec

Lois should be left alone if his got no insights to share and not this stupid Q&A about himself and his infamous chicken dance.

Pacman will do the chicken dance. He just danced the spagheti dance, giving in at 145. Byt fight time, he will say "No mas!" at 5th round.

Nec, you really knew what you are talking about? Linear title means you are considered the best among the others in that division. There's no belt in there. All you need is to prove you are the best among active fighter in your division, that's it.

Yeah right. Clottey is much bigger than Pacquiao but too much slower than Pacquiao. If a slower Clottey was able to slip his punches on Cotto, how much more will Pacquiao do to him. Remember Pacquiao has a middleweight power in his punches.

The advantages of Cotto are: bigness, hugeness, largeness, bulkiness, masiveness, giganticness, giantism, enormousness, tremendousness, and "lakiness".

bash on lois? yes of course. you might not know its but from our point of view you look like a pac-hater judging from what you just wrote.

yeah we are connected by spanish blood but never have you been on pacmans side from what you wrote "mexican /puerto rico" so its obvious your hating on the pacman. so no matter how humble pacman is or what he will accomplish you will always be hating, why? cuz your fighter lost to him, this is our point of view. but we dont hate morales or those 2 other guys who won against pacman. this is the difference between our culture.

Dang right there will be pain. Mostly on Cotto very likely. His chin will be too strong for his own good. and before he can hit back, the pacman has already pivoted, danced away, swayed to the side cocking another rapping combination..rat-tat-tat...another boxer that might retire after fighting the pacman.

RE: "Manny does not HAVE to gain the weight to fight at 145, he can come in at 130 if he wants to."

This is FALSE. There is a minimum weight that a fighter can weigh in on. In this case, it should be between 140-145 lbs.

I don't understand why the big fuss over the 145 lb. catchweight!! Cotto weighed 146 lbs. vs. Clottey, just a pound heavier for Pac's fight!!
In short, this is not a dehydrated Cotto, okay?

I've read on the tale of the tape in Pacland thread, Cotto is bigger in almost all the physical faculty,if i remember it right, 1"inch advantage of Manny on the wrist but same deficit on the clenched hands of Cotto, meaning pacquiao is smaller in most of the attributes.Unfortunately it is not indicative on the" tale" of a comparative measurements speed, positive improvements on skils, hit punching power, most of all fighting heart.Obviously those are the Manny Pacquiao's great attributes ,exciting actually. One more thing, for both, great motivation.
