Pacquiao looks ahead to Philippine politics

The decision to bring in 35 year old Mexican and welterweight Jose Luis Castillo to Baguio, Philippines is a puzzling move, and appears to be disturbingly counter-productive to Manny Pacquiao's training regimen. But who made this decision on behalf of the interests of the Filipino superstar? Was it Team Pacquiao, Freddie Roach, or advisor Michael Koncz? There is speculation that it was the latter.
In an article posted as early as September 10 by Boxing Confidential writer and Examiner.com New York boxing columnist Michael Marley, Freddie Roach was quoted expressing his displeasure in the uselessness of Castillo as a sparring partner for his famous friend and client: "Why would I use Castillo? I can’t use a shot fighter to get Manny ready for Cotto?" And in a related posting as published on the Boston Herald on September 13. Despite the fact that the head trainer found no utility in using a shot fighter over three weeks ago, adjustments still have not been made in order to provide a worthy and challenging partner that can optimize the client's fight preparations for November 14. How often have you seen a minimum wage worker laboring in McDonald's, and forgeting to put pickles on a Big Mac? Zero, none. McDonald's has a perfect business process with effective controls when it comes to their food. Three weeks and no corrective measures taken for something as crucial as a shot Castillo as a sparmate - on a $12+ million purse?
One chance, two chance, three chance . . . and counting
As the negotiations unfolded this summer, how about not being clear on what weight the fight would take place at? How about not buttoning up the issue of Miguel Cotto's WBO title to be at stake? With the strategic error giving the Puerto Rican leverage to secure additional payments and considerations? How about assurances that Baguio would be a proper preparatory training site, only to see an unfolding of events that display a Rocky III circus atmosphere? And Bob Arum's initial displeasure at the progress of Manny's regimen? Only to be sugarcoated repeatedly. And what of the financial and legal advisors' failure to advise their high net worth client early of the negative effects of staying too long in the United States, which is now necessitating a logistical scramble? The IRS ruling is afterall the root cause behind the Baguio decision.
Allegedly, Koncz also appeared to have attempted to provide an inappropriate sparmate for the Ricky Hatton fight by way of a super middleweight fighter nearly 30 pounds heavier than Manny. Roach appears ready to eject Castillo upon his impending arrival at the mountainous Baguio training camp. Jose Luis Castillo last fought on September 12 - barely a month ago; the problem is, he has fought journeymen and D-class fighters, mostly in Mexico, his last six fights. That he is a shot fighter would be universally accepted by a panel of ring pundits. Castillo lost to journeyman Sebastian Lujan in July 2008.
And in his last major and visible fight in June 2007, Castillo was knocked out in the fourth round by none other than British Ricky Hatton. (Hatton vs. Castillo knockout video in the fourth round.) The former champion Castillo was a great and admirable ring warrior who took Floyd Mayweather, Jr. to the brink of defeat twice in 2002. He came up just short both times. He lost once, and then defeated once, the late and legendary Diego Corrales in 2005 in one of the most memorable fights of the decade.
To be sure, Castillo's time is way passed. In a tough fight against the sturdy, big, and attacking Miguel Cotto, Castillo offers nothing to elevate the skills of Pacquiao, except plod around as a human punching bag.

Look, Roach is a strict disciplinarian and he won't take any sparring partner than won't benefit Manny. So, let's not make a big deal of this, but we know Koncz is not a trainer, but a travelling secretary who's got no boxing exeperience.
