Haiti earthquake forces Berto to withdraw

Update:   Andre Berto is withdrawing from his January 30 fight with Shane Mosley in Las Vegas, citing inability to properly train for the highly anticipated bout.

Berto represented Haiti in the Athens Olympics.

Speculations are mounting that WBA welterweight champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley will face former pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather, Jr., after the latter could not reach an agreement to face WBO welterweight champion and current pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao on March 13.

Golden Boy Promotions, headed by Richard Schaefer, was quoted within the past two weeks that Mayweather would fight Mosley.  The company represents Mayweather.

Two dates appear to be initially considered:  the original March 13th date, or May 1st.  The latter would avoid competing with the Pacquiao vs Joshua Clottey fight, also on March 13th, and would pit the #2 fighter in the world (Mayweather) against the #3 fighter in the world (Mosley), around Cinco de Mayo festivities.

Andre Berto's statement regarding 7.0 Haiti earthquake:

I’m devastated by everything currently happening in Haiti. As everybody knows, I have a lot of family members in Haiti and proudly represented Haiti in the 2004 Olympic Games. Like many other Haitian-Americans, my family and I are working to reach my loved ones. From what we have learned to this point, some of my family members are still missing and we have already been informed that members of my family have passed away in the earthquake.

“We are currently working on starting our own Haitian relief efforts, and I will be releasing additional information on how everyone can help very soon. I am asking everyone for their continued thoughts and prayers for the people in Haiti during this devastating time.

Virtually the entire boxing community is jaded that Floyd Mayweather, Jr's demands for additional testing contributed to a cancellation of his fight with pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao. Dear HBO: Save boxing. Sure, Manny Pacquiao vs Floyd Mayweather, Jr elevates the sport tremendously. Another shallow and ridiculous excuse by berto, this fight has been farce from the start, manny fought diaz and cotto, when his country was ravaged by tragedies such as destructive storms and floods, and wins big because he used that tragedies as his inspiration, this is another demolition job concocted by corrupt and greedy GBP and his minions to undermine manny.

take it easy dude. we all don't know what happend to immediate family of Berto. I know there could be possible offer to Berto by GBP but I'm sure that's not the reason why Berto withdraw on this one. I know and we all know how devastating and how shameful it is that pac vs gay didn't happen because of GBP. We'll just have to wait how mosley will kick gay's ass. Take it easy dude.

for sure mayweather wont take the march 13 date coz its too soon. he will wait till mosely becomes 40 years old before he fights him. hey guys how about olympic style testing for sugar. he admitted taking peds before.

GBP should dub the fight between Gayweather Kenducky Floyd Chicken(KFC) and Shane Mosley as “The Battle of XYROID (Xylocaine vs Steroid)” hahaha!!!!so cute and appealing for drug users.!!! What is so funny here is, Mayweather and the Golden Gay Promotions doesn`t want to fight Pacquiao because of their suspicion about steroids or drugs that Pacquiao is taking which Pacquiao had never been tested positive for this...but take note,i repeat take note: They want to fight the certified drug user by the name of Sugar Shane Mosley...hehehe...another mind-blogging from KFC and GBP camps hahaha...but i got the point.because KFC and GBP now admit that they are no match against Pacquiao no matter how they try their best to downgrade the real pound for pound king...aside from that,Mosley is old at 38 hehehe, agyweather can slow him down!!!

If we follow your logic, then MANNY should haven't fought to diaz and cotto, (in the first place) in the same way berto doing right now because of tragedy that befallen to his country of haiti? use your common sense dude.

I agree with forrester, i think theres something fishy with the sudden cancellation of mosley and berto's fight, and the reason is MONEY, berto was given step-aside fee, paving the way for much bigger mosley-mayweather fight...clearly GBP had a hand in this shaddy transaction.

I sympathized with Andre Berto on the haiti earthquake tragedy. I salute Andre for sacrificing for the sake of his fellow Haitians in times of disaster. That's a true warrior with a big heart. I hope all boxers will be like you.

For the Mosley vs Mayweather fight. My comment is that this fight wont happen either. Mayweather will definitely make the same request...BLOOD TEST !! I suggest you all boxing fans not to discuss this fight coz you'll just get frustrated. Mayweather will duck Mosley. I'm 100% pretty sure of that!!!

berto is coward. he must likewise dedicate his fight to his countryman and give them strong statement that THEY can rise in such devastating eatrhquake. Its a ploy and alibi to giveway to the demand of GBP AND AL HAYMON. USED UR PRINCIPLE BERTO. FIGHT FOR YOUR COUNTRYMAN. FIGHT FOR THE BENEFIT OF YOUR FELLOW HAITIANS NOT BUT WITHDRAWING. U CAN ALSO FIGHT AND RAISE DOLLARS FOR IT

We symphatize with Andre and his whole family.

Now, the fall-out of the Mayweather-Pacquiao megafight resulted to two exciting fights that the fans will support, Pacquiao-Clottey and Mayweather-Mosley.

The winners of that matches, hopefully Pacquiao and Mayweather, can meet in the fall for the biggest and most important bout in the new century!

Boxing is dying? OH, HELL, NO!

You have no credits in helping us. u giveway to the gaywaetahers. alhaymon and GBP ALL ARE HYPOCRITE. THEY USED THE EATRHQUAKE IN HAITI TO CANCELLED IT POOR GOLDEN BOYS

Now that the Mosley-Berto fight is not going to happen or its now cancel and they are now entertaining a fight between Mosley versus Gayweather which is eventually a boring fight again not because of Mosley but truly because of Gayweather, My BIG QUESTION is, Will the Golden Boy Promotion, Richard Schaefer, Oscar de la Hoya, Gayweather AND all the arrogant idiots & ZOMBIES of the Gayweather team will demand a RANDOM BLOOD TESTING for Shane Mosley knowing the fact that Shane Mosley admitted that he took steroid before? If these stupid & PROFESSIONAL LIARS from the Golden Boy Promotion & Gayweather team will not demand a RANDOM BLOOD testing from Shane Mosley then we all know that they only want to destroy the reputation of the king of pound for pound Manny Pacquiao. It is then the we can call them the PROFESSIONAL LIARS & IDIOTS of the boxing world FOR LIFE!!!
WARNING to the Richard Schaefer, Oscar de la Hoya, Mayweather & to all their ZOMBIES fanatics. WE ARE WATCHING YOU!!!

this is my opinion on this.

the withdrawal of Berto is just a saving-face for Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and to Richard Schaefer and most especially to Oscar dela Hoya... they cannot prevent it if in the minds of the concerned Boxing fans such as myself will think that they paid Berto to withdraw from his fight with Mosley. It comes from the mouth of Mayweather, himself when he said and suggested to pay at least $1-M to Marquez to give way for a Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight, which means that they had been doing it and is now doing it with Mosley vs. Berto fight.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Richard Schaefer and Oscar dela Hoya has nothing more in their sleeves except to match Floyd Mayweather, Jr. with a pound for pound contender in the category of Mosley just to match the Bob Arum promotions of Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight. Fortunately for them, here comes the Haiti devastation which will be a perfect "ALIBI" for the withdrawal of Berto.

As early as 1st week of january one week before the haiti tragedy happened, there where already reports that berto could be offered substantial amount as his step-aside fee, paving the way for mayweather-mosley fight this coming may concocted by GBP to steal the limelight of pacquiao-clottey fight.

AND this haiti tragedy is perfectly used as an excuse for berto, this coward, greedy and sellout berto is allowing himself to be used by conspiracy of GBP and his manager al haymon to discredit and humiliate manny at all cost, THIS A WORK OF CHICAGO STYLE MAFIA OF OSCAR AND HIS COHORTS.

man... pls understand andre..... he is coming through all these stuff... yeah he loves his homeland... i knocw that we boxing fans are disapponted that the first blockbuster fight this year is cancelled but the thing is, what happened is beyond everyone's control.... like in the philippines where there is some sort of davastation last year... in this situation, there are some family members of andre became homeless and unfortunately some of them died! and it happened 1 week remaining in his blockbuster fight so what will he feel?? he will feel devastated and no time to recover... so pls understand him and pray to those people in haiti! and we boxing fans pray for yoy and your family, hoping that you will overcome this and get back on the ring soon! peace!

floyd / mosley fight has level playing field without random drug testing needed. they should fight in the ring without gloves, the more xylocaine and steroids to be taken by them before going groogy and knockout will win the fight.

Wow Mayweather fans have got to be the most gullible people. Hey I HAVE NO EVIDENCE AT ALL BUT "I KNOW" THAT MAYWEATHER IS USING STEROIDS. He's a very talented boxer, but I don't think he could be that good without using any form of PEDS. I even have a 'trusty insider' who has an email of the PED's that Mayweather has been using throughout his entire career and not just Xylocaine. I have no proof but something isn't right with Mayweather. He actually went up in weight MORE than MP. And too me that is just too fishy. Mayweather I think needs to get blood drawn everyday while he's in training camp to ensure a fair and level playing field. ANY opponents that fight Mayweather should ask for a more stricter drug testing than the one that Floyd was asking for.

The GBP mafia will control this fight. Floyd will be a sure winner even before the fight will start. Shane Mosley will just be made a sacrificial lamb just like Marquez who was also betrayed by GBP. Everybody knows how GBP run things: sacrificing its fighters for huge profit. Mosley will have to play the game as one of the stockholders of GBP together w/ Dela Hoya and give-up the WBA crown to Mayweather on a silver platter to save GBP company. We've all seen it in previous GBP fights and all those anomalies. That's why Bob Arum of Top Rank never wanted again to do business with Golden Boy Promotions because of bad business practices.

    to ABC:

IF we follow your false logic then Manny should not have fought against diaz and cotto, because the Philippines then suffered terrible tragedies such as devastating storms, floods and volcanic eruption, what an incoherent moron you are.

BUT then what berto will bring good to his country of haiti if he stopped fighting? nothing but disappointment to his people, but by fighting with mosley he should have help his people by using his fight as a venue for raising public contribution to be donated to his home country of haiti, instead this guy berto had succumbed to the pressure of money and selling his principles to the devil by abandoning his people in exchange for his selfish interest, i'm sure lots of haitians are deeply embarassed for his cowardice.

WHAT separate manny from the mayweather, mosley and berto is that, manny wants to entertain the boxing fans and bring honor to his country everytime he fights, you better shut your black ass if you don't know boxing.
