In Sonora, Mexico, WBC super featherweight champion Humberto Soto (50-7-2, 32KOs) stepped up to the lightweight division and earned a ten-round decision victory over Austin, Texas-based Jesus Chavez (44-7, 30KOs).
Three officials all scored 100-87 for Soto.
Other Weekend Results:
In the first defense of his title, Venezuelan and WBCl lightweight champion Edwin Valero (26-0, 26 KOs) defeated 34-year-old challenger Héctor Velázquez (51-14-2, 35 KOs) by way of a 6th round TKO in La Guaira, Caracas, Venezuela.
Valero is a rising star in boxing, and sports a 100% KO ratio. However, he has been largely untested in U.S. bouts and against higher caliber opponents. The 28-year-old Valero was cut on the nose and eyebrow from head butts. The Venezuelan will likely face WBC interim lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco next.
