The numbers are in from Pacquiao vs. Cotto and the winner is Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

The numbers are in on the Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto fight, at least as reported by HBO. Already some media are slobbering all over themselves as to the 1,250,000 buys in America, as if they contributed to it.

It boils down to how you interpret what you can verify.

I say the September 19 Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez fight, based only on the numbers, is much more impressive.

If you're Filipino, don't get your panties in a wad, as Pacquiao still needs to be marketed more and better in America even after participating in a number of HBO and HBO Pay-Per-View events.

Let's go back just a couple of months ago to Mayweather vs. Marquez. The fight had been bad-mouthed since day one. It even was postponed from a summer date to a fall date because the casinos weren't doing any business over the summer and the fight had yet to generate a buzz, let alone ticket sales.

But HBO believed in it and largely because of the star power of Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

The Mayweather fight did 1.05 million buys compared to the 1.25 million of Pacquiao.

So it's 200,000 less homes. Granted, that's a ton where I come from. But it also cost half as much as Pacquiao vs. Cotto.

However, Mayweather hadn't fought in almost two years. He fought an opponent, who was well-known, but was a 36 year-old opponent fighting two weight divisions above his norm and while he could urinate, he couldn't talk much American smack.

And Ultimate Fighting Championship was countering with a UFC 103, which wasn't much more than a glorified ESPN show, but it totaled 400,000 buys directly opposite Mayweather vs. Marquez.

Then, factor in September 19 was a major night of American college football, taking away even more, maybe millions of casual fans.

So how can the same people that bad-mouthed the Mayweather fight at 1.05 million buys say Pacquiao's 1.25 million buys was so great and what boxing needs.

Even HBO is at a loss to explain how well the Mayweather vs. Marquez fight did.

So every time you criticize Floyd Mayweather, Jr. in public, it's really taking money out of the hands of Manny Pacquiao.

let's not forget that "firepower" featured two non-american fighters but still managed to get such numbers here in the U.S..Let's be fair to JMM, though you might say he's not the main man in that fight against mayweather, still it's safe to say that he still made he's share on that ppv numbers.

you said it yourself, thats 200,000 more buys, and costs more than the mayweather fight, AND STILL 200,000 more buys. plus it was rescheduled so less time for people to buy tickets. just admit that pacquiao-cotto won. you dont have to justify just to win. mayweather could have fought a better opponent if he wanted to, but he didnt, so he lost.

W-T-F!!! It wasn't Mayweather that made that fight. It was Marquez and all the Mexican fans. If you think Mayweather is such a money draw, why don't you fight him and let him kick your scrawny a-s-s around the ring and see how much money that will make....oh wait a minute..nevermind, I'm sure millions would want to watch the dumbest boxing scribe get his a-s-s whipped!!...I know I would. Matt, A good number of those buys come from the Mexicans and Mexican-American Communities. The fight was scheduled to coincide with Mexico's Indipendence day. If you factor that thought, it cannot be all Mayweather. You are undermining Marquez and his following. Also there are quite a lot who watch the fight simply to see Floyd defeated. Always remember there is a good chunk of people in the United States that does not like Floyd. I wish you would re-write this article. I do like to read your columns. Thanks

You say that in May vs. JMM...its the star power of May that did 1.05m...and wat is JMM? dummy? LOL. You're so biased man! Have you ever tried to think FAIRLY for once? You are so full of yourselves! Just because JMM is not American, he cant draw people anymore? Wake up! SInce your fall from grace, America is a has been! Not everything revolves around you. In every PPV unless you can show me proof...its BOTH fighters that made the numbers! NOT Mayweather alone...not Pacquiao alone! If you make an argument that because Pac vs. Cotto did 1.25m and JMM vs. May did 1.05...then May is the clear winner or bigger draw coz the fight has been maligned from the very start...what a preposterous lie! Maligning or trash talking are part of promotions in boxing...its has been that way even before you and I were born. Lets just talk numbers and facts... How much were the tickets for JMM vs May? and how much for Pac vs. Cotto? How many tickets had to be rediscounted for both fights?

HBO is at a loss to explain the 1.05M buys for PBF. Of course they are, considering that it is not true! You can manipulate that kind of numbers easily. And it is so much easier for HBO to do it and not be held by the IRS for it because they can easily just say, "lets add 300,000 buys for PBF and deduct 300,000 from Pacman's fight in the future, and we will be held accountable for the same amount." There is no real check and balance here, because the ultimate test which will hurt their pockets will not be complaining. Come on, how can you insinuate that the fight is almost comparable,(on the strength of the PPV numbers), when the Pac's fight was fully sold out weeks before, and the PBF's fight was 30% empty? To think that so many discounts were offered and so many promotional inducers were opened up to the fans. Even offering 2-for-1 nights stay in some hotels in Las Vegas? Consider the close tie up between HBO and Golden Boy Promo/PBF, and you should not look far for explanation.

This article clearly has no intelligent input whatsoever.
Let me rephrased what was said here Mayweather wins on a 1.05mil buys because Pacquiao has 1.25mil buys. If that didn't make any sense then welcome to the article.

Personally, I feel the numbers are closer 1.55M (1.25M+0.3M) for Pacman and 0.75M (1.05M-0.3M) for PBF. That is whta live attendance indicate. Thay is what internet traffic indicates, that is what media write-ups an articles indicate, that is what casual and hardcore fans indicate, that is what celebrity and common folk fans indicate. So please stop taking every opportunity to nuthug PBF for the littlest thing. The man isn't even worth it. And to fuel further his sick attitude towards money, his lack of interest in entertaining the fans, proper values, and so many other things, just makes you as sick as he is!

"great" article.. once again unbias journalism on your part. Mayweather/marquez was such a hit offered at a bargain price that the curious were more than willing to pay for it. Sells at a lower price, the moving of the fight date because of ticket sales..the fact they had to go up against a UFC figth card and college football night..impressive to say the least.never mind mayweather is a "hometown" favorite, a house hold name who had media exposure with shows like dancing with the stars, wwf, and several commercials prior to the fight that would have prompted the casual viewer to buy a comeback fight on a boxer whom they probably had never watched before. pacquiao/cotto fight is not impressive considering both fighters are not from America, had no media exposure to the american general public other than the media fight tour and hbo 24/7 which also mayweather/marquez had as well...1.05 million is more impressive than 1.25 million any day especially as how you pointed out brilliantly!!

How on earth can a LOSER be a WINNER? How can a 1.25M PPV lose to a 1M PPV? Come to to think of it... Mayweather vs. Marquez were supposed to be held in July but GBP postponed it, not because of some 'invented' rib injury (i believe it as a lie)of Mayweather but because of poor ticket sales. So GBP moved it to September to buy more time and to take advantage of Mexican fans who are hyped and fooled to believe that their Marquez can miraculously beat Mayweather. Even with such 5 month adjustment of schedule, the fight could not even fill the MGM Grand. Only a fool can say that Mayweather is a clear winner. Numbers don't lie..

hey matt you aricle is a complete garbage...i just want to ask you questions that I am very intrigue about. First, why the Gayweather vs Marquez only sold $49 per PPV buy compare to Pacquiao vs Cotto $54,does it mean that Gayweather-Marquez fight is just a cheap item in a bargain shop? Second, why did the WBC World Boxing Council has offered their Diamond Championship Belt only to the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight, why didn't they offered it to the winner of the Gayweather vs Marquez fight? My answer to that is..WBC already knows before hand that the Gayweather-Marquez will just be boring fight that people will forget after they get out of the arena. unspectacular..

Having mentioned the eventhough this and that's of the PPV buys (Texas Vs Texas Tech - I wish I watched that one instead. at least I didn't fall asleep. thank you DVR; UFC 103) you just shot yourself and your argument on the foot. It goes to show that most American viewers didn't really care about Floyd.

You forgot another big thing. That's the Mexican Independence weekend. The Mexican viewers are the ones that really carried the PPV numbers, not Floyd.

I always liked your articles, idk what happened to this one really.

Sorry man. Minues 2,000 cool points. Better luck next time.

i dont know what kind of thinking this writer has in his hallow brain. Stating that PBF fought a drained 36-yr old marquez who jumps 2 weights more than his division.. You can sense the bias on his comments.. He didnt even mention that Pac comes from 106lbs division all the way to welterweight and thats a big WOW!
