No major boxing event is official without the perfunctory New York City press conference, and Thursday's splash will be in grand fashion at the new Yankees Stadium and is open to the public.
I could go negative here and raise the question, "Why isn't Manny fighting there?" Maybe he will soon, is my answer. He could join the legends that have fought next door at the imploding, old Yankee Stadium such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson.
I'm assuming Pacquiao will be in great physical shape when he steps into the ring November 14. He doesn't get too heavy between fights and is in his physical prime now anyway.
So, it is, you know, the mental aspect. Does he trust his limo driver? Anyone in the small inner circle telling spies what he just ordered for dinner - in case weight is a problem? Sparring partners selling secrets? Is he just tired and ready to rid himself of this new pressure and annoyance of being internationally idolized.
While Miguel Cotto is a pro and will give a solid effort, does he have anything left to give other than a two or three round spurt before Manny puts him away?
Six months, even a year ago, Cotto would have been more of a challenge but recent fights have taken it out of him in my opinion.
This is not to knock a Pacquiao victory or effort to say the opponent wasn't a challenge.
On the contrary, Pacquiao gets his opponents out of there with precision. And he fights the best available for the most part.
But this was an easy fight for promoter Bob Arum to make as he has the rights to both fighters. Cotto might even be the fan favorite at the Bronx presser in the world's media capitol.
However, Cotto is damaged goods and Arum already chose to defend the honor of "The Plasterman," Antonio Margarito over Cotto. Arum has chosen to wait out his suspension or have him fight in Mexico.
However, the public has told him they would buy Cotto, off of his Clottey effort, to be a worthy challenger of Pacquiao.
So let's get beyond this for our purposes here.
I'm thinking Roach's choice of a Mexican high - mountain training locale would have been best for a fighter who is fighting distractions. Cut him off totally from friends, family, hanger's on and local newspapers and other demons.
Why make him now fly back in several days over a dozen time zones right back smack into the same distractions he needs to physically be separated from for his own good?
I don't get. I hope even at this late hour, they have a change of heart and train in Mexico.
Pacquiao may win November 14, and even make it look easy, but this is a ridiculous, uncalculated risk being taken, probably by non -boxing people. If not this fight, but down the road it could come back to haunt Team Pacquiao.

slow down, Sloan. You totally underestimate Cotto, man. Don't be fooled by Manny's win over Hatton. That guy had no defense. and pacquaio is the best finisher if ever i saw one after iron mike. if he's fighting a guy with no defense, pacquaio will kill him in seconds.
on the other hand, cotto's guard is excellent, and if the pacman can't put down a dehydrated dela hoya there is no assurance manny has the power to knock cotto out. cotto's skull is armored. i mean, he withstood all those punches from torres. that dude is one tough nut to crack.
Manny will try to outbox Cotto and he has an excellent chance of winning. But I won't count cotto out. the fact that Cotto trained a month ahead of pacquaio is proof enough for me he's still got the fire in his belly.
i still think once roach talks sense into pacquaio's head they will train in mexico. or if roach sees all the distractions in baguio is too much, i think they will head out to mexico.

It amazes me how people are so nearsighted... Theres life after boxing.. And pac knows that. Hes not going to be in the fight game forever... Thats why he is laying the foundations to his businesses outside of boxing.

I doubt pacquiao can KO the bigger cotto, heck all his opponents are all biger than him, most of them. but if he will win it will be through the score card. and yes im starting to have doubts of pacman wining since he's gotten big headed over his wins and has been taking cotto lightly. I wish he has been training 2 months ago but hell he hasnt even started, so this is gonna be a disasster. sometimes I think arum is asking pacman to lose so they could have a rematch to double the cash flow.

i agree. it is senseless for pacquiao to make long travels back and forth from manila to the united states, etc. he should be made to conserve his energies and it's also true there will be unimaginable distractions if he pushes through with the plan to train in baguio city. trainer roach knows what he's talking about but if pacquiao insists he's the boss then let it be. but let it be said also that his possible defeat with cotto is no joke. and he will have nobody to blame if he returns after nov. 14 a defeated P4PK but himself because of being bullheaded.

What really bothers me is the venue for Team Pacquiao, if they finalize their training camp, where would they get world class boxers to spar against the pound 4 pound king? Is Baguio sufficient enough to take care of the fans and secure the team? Well if this make sense,.. kindly do something right away!!
From the comments posted it seems everyone does not know how Filipino people are and shame on those Filipinos who's comments are similar to those who have never been in the Philippines. first of all, Baguio is a great place to train. The air is clean and it is quiet there and there are a lot of places Manny can do a good amount of running and not be distracted. As for distractions, the people of the Philippines are aware of the importance of this fight and I am sure they will not interrupt. lastly, I believe if there is anyone who knows what he needs in terms of physical tolerance while training it is Manny. if 8 weeks has been working for him then so be it. Manny reasons for not going to Mexico are understandable. The question on security matters and being away from family is stressful. Being in a place that is close to home is important. Being close to family is even more important. For Manny that is where his strengths lie, home and family. So lets give Manny all our support.
I can't blame Pacquiao for choosing Baguio City over Toluca, Mexico as Mexico is entirely new to Manny's regimen. I guess, security issue is the primary concern of Team Pacquio. In the Philippines, Manny can engage his entire battalion of security to look after him 24/7 while in Mexico he doesn't have that privilege. Mexico is as vulnerable of Philippines when it comes to security but Manny knows best the Philippines. Second consideration for choosing Philippines is that Manny is simply patriotic. He doesn't need to go anywhere else just to train where Philippines can offer him, he wants to promote Philippines to the world through HBO as simple as that. Remember, Philippines even wanted him to be a Deputy Tourism Secretary....so can't blame the guy...he loves the Philippines so much.

Well I do think this will be similar to David Diaz bout against Manny. Cotto will choose to box and punches 2 to 4 punch combinations and has difficulty fighting an energizer fighter specially like Manny. Cotto needs to catch Manny, if he can, and i don't think so. Manny will kill Cotto in the later rounds, overwhelming Cotto with different punch combinations. If Cotto does not hurt Manny, this will be the Boricua bomber's career ending bout.

Pacman wouldnt' be a superstar and #1 P4P if he doesnt think and care for the best of himself. Just take it easy fellow. He started training long before Cotto started his own routine. That's when Manny is sleeping.... yeah... That's the beatiful thing about Manny. He can train while sleeping and no one can do that except the best P4P. Of course, he will not always show to the world what he does because thats the secret of being the best. And that'll probably work. Just like anyone of us. You know what I'm talking about. Peace. i agree that manny will give all his efforts to win against cotto because if he is defeated then that will be goodbye to his candidacy to congress. the people will be disappointed in him and they will show them on the ballot to teach him the lesson. thats why manny should dispose cotto within the 4th to 5th rounds, no ifs and no buts.

I think Baguio is the best place for Manny to train. Once Roach arrives he will be the boss for the traning camp and everybody follows him including Koncz. I understand Freddie want it to be in Mexico but once he see Baguio for sure he will agree that this is the right place for Manny.
Boxing fans knows how important this fight is. There will be scheduled fight fans time every week but at the right time with the approval from Roach.
If both Pacquiao and Mayweather pass both their test against Cotto and Marquez, there will be no doubt in my mind, a huge possibility Pacquiao vs Mayweather fight may be held either Madison Square Garden or Yankee Stadium. Yeah, why not?
Regarding training camp, Mexico is a dangerous place rightnow compare to Baguio. This is the city of pine and the summer capital of the Philippines has a cool climate ranging from 11oC to 26oC as it´s warmest. City on the of the mountain with an altitude of 1500 meters or 5100 ft. Lots of modern facilities to offer, own airport, hotels, a place established by americans in 1900. Part of Baguio reminds me of San Francisco, CA. Tourist dream.
all of you just don't get it. all of the things that were happening with Team Pacquiao were properly planned by uncle Bob. Team Pacquiao's training camp is to hype their mega fight. Baguio will be the new arsenel of HBO 24/7 so that it won't be that boring like the Gayweather-Marquez episodes.hehehe
