boxer Arturo Gatti is being held by authorities for suspicion
of his murder in Brazil.
She gave police conflicting stories
Amanda Carina Barbosa Rodriguez Gatti, according to reports, is being detained as a suspect in connection with the murder of her 37-year-old husband Arturo Gatti in Brazil on Sunday.
The retired former world champion was found dead Saturday in a rented condo in a resort area in Northeast Brazil.
Police believe he was drunk and went to sleep, was first struck in the back of his head and then strangled with a purse strap, He may have been dead for 10 hours before authorities were called.
A one-year-old son was found with the wife and was unharmed and is now with Amanda Gatti's sister.
Amanda Gatti denies any connection to the murder and has blamed a third party.
She could not explain why it took 10 hours for authorities to be notified.
Police believe a third party involvement would be almost impossible because they were on the second floor with a key card security system with only one window.
She has not confessed. Police say it may take two weeks to finish their investigation.
Former world champion Acelino Freitas, of Brazil, said he thought the two were having marital problems for sometime.
Arturo Gatti is being remembered as a fighter with great courage, determination and a fighting spirit that made him one of the greatest TV action fighters of his generation, earning fans worldwide.
However a darker side of his character may be revealed in the coming weeks.

If we could get the garbage Jacko stuff off the air, we might have a chance to hear more about Arturo. I loved the Ward-Gotti fights.
We don't need a darker side. He was a phenomenal boxer. You got your money's worth when you paid to see him fight. He will be greatly missed. Maybe the darker side will reveal that he didn't put the cap on the toothpaste, thereby justifying his wife murdering him.

You know, I agree that it was tasteless to dampen the memory of Arturo Gatti by alluding to some "dark side" being revealed. All marriages have troubles, all people make mistakes, all of us have failures that don't require resurrecting upon our demise. But in saying this, I must also comment that we don't do Arturo Gatti's memory any justice by making digs at Michael Jackson. It is equally inappropriate to diminish his accomplishments by bringing up those things he was accused of and never found guilty. Stop acting like you were never accused of something; stop acting like you know. You don't know, and I don't know. So recognize what you do know, that we lost a great athlete and a great entertainer. Wish them well and leave it at that!
I agree with thunder fan, we spent 1.2 mil to put MJ to rest, the very least we can do is respect the memory of Arturo who was one of the most exciting fighters in recent memory, this was a man's man who gave his all in the ring to please us fans. I hope HBO will showcase his great moments for us to re-live soon.
Arturo Gatti was a great fighter, a gracious winner as well as a gracious looser. He loved his fans and his fans loved him. I was hoping that some day soon I was going to turn on HBO and see Arturo sitting next to Jim Lampley giving us play by plays like so many other fighters did when Arturo fought, unfortunately this will never be. I will remember him for the great fighter he was, how he gave not just a 100% but a 1000% evertime he stepped into the ring.
A darker side to Arturo? I am sure his wife will be dishing a bunch of that to try to save herself now. We can only hope that she ends up in some nice Brazilian prision for the rest of her life.
Let Arturo's family raise his son, the did an excellent job with Arturo. His family has lost a son and a little boy has lost his dad.......my heart is broken.
I had the privledge of meeting Arturo Gatti in 2006. What an honor to meet such a true warrior of the ring. I'm sorry his bitch wife did him dirty and for the article saying a darker side will be revealed, well that's just the media for you. R.I.P Thunder

people don't just kill you with their purse straps. another article said they were separating and had a volatile relationship and 20 witnesses said he was drunk and yelling the night before. he had knocked her to the floor and she had some injuries. don't think she just was a crazed killer. of course, there is a darker side. in both maybe. its just one report. my sister just died as a passenger with her husband in a car accident. she was in a small car in a dust storm smashed between 18 wheelers in a big pile up. the news report said it was unknown if she was wearing a seat belt. she always did. she was then. it didn't change or save her. so that was horrible to read for us. we wondered what that implied too. i had never heard of him until today. i hope his child is safe. its hard to find good guardians sometimes.
