As part of an ongoing product recall initiative, on July 30 the Procter & Gamble Company expanded their voluntary recall action to include all products manufactured in their Lewisburg, Ohio plant. Affected formulas include Eukanuba Pure, Eukanuba Custom Care (Sensitive Skin), Eukanuba Naturally Wild, and the Iams Veterinary Formula series of foods.
The latest pet food recall was prompted by a potential salmonella contamination issue at the manufacturing plant. No pet or human illnesses related to salmonella contamination of the foods have been reported. The products under voluntary recall are sold at specialty pet stores and veterinary offices throughout the United States and Canada. The Iams website provides a list of UPC codes for the recalled pet foods.
Dog and cat owners who have purchased the recalled foods are advised to discard them. Salmonella affects humans and pets. Humans can become infected with salmonella by handling the dry food. Infected pets can be carriers without showing any symptoms, but will shed the Salmonella organism and can infect both humans and other animals.
Pet owners who have fed the recalled foods should observe all humans and pets in the household for signs of Salmonella infection. In humans, the symptoms include nausea, vomiting, fever, abdominal cramping and diarrhea. Severe infections can lead to infections of the heart or urinary tract, muscle pain, arthritis and eye irritation. Infected pets may display fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. Owners and their pets who have handled or eaten food affected by the recall and are showing any of the signs of Salmonella infection should contact their health care professionals.
