Eagles 4, Terriers 3
With just seconds left, in what shaped up to be a nail biting finish for Boston hockey fans, Boston College goalie John Muse stepped up and saved the day for the Eagles.
Boston University put on their full blown offensive assault with a little more than three minutes left in a 4-2 game, when Terrier coach John Parker decided to pull goalie, Kieran Milan, and go with a six-on-four attack. With the two-man advantage, BU junior Colby Cohen quickly got his stick on a rebound in front the net and pulled the Terriers within a goal, 4-3. That’s when BC regrouped and settled in for the stretch run.
Eagle coach, and two-time national champion, Jerry York, called a quick timeout and allowed his team to rest and prepare for the final two minutes of play. As the Terrier assault ensued, BC seemed ready defensively and put together a few nice stops in their own end. Terrier forward, Nick Bonino, made one last ditch effort to tie the game at four, but yet again tournament-MVP John Muse was there with a pad save and a quick cover with the glove to end the BU rally.
Nevertheless, as the buzzer sounded, the Eagles players and Superfans everywhere rejoiced with a resounding cheer. “For Boston”, the BC fight song, could be heard playing all throughout the Eagles victory celebration, and it was only fitting as this one was truly for Boston.
With their fourth Beanpot title in the past 10 years, BC was pumped up with the same adrenaline rush seen in the 2008 National Title team and it gives Eagle fans everywhere hope for a repeat performance.
As is tradition, BC players and fans returned to campus for the customary “Bush’s Baked Bean’s, Beanpot Trot”, where some delicious Bush’s beans are cooked and stirred inside the legendary trophy for all to enjoy….Alright, well at the very least fans excitement was running at an all time high and the faith in this bunch has been restored after a few questionable losses in Hockey East play.
So, look out for this team to take shape and for the first line to take Mid-90’s N’Sync form, saying “Bye Bye Bye” to the competition. Naturally, sophomore Cam Atkinson would play the role of J-T, while senior captain Ben Smith would probably resemble the leadership and consistency of JC. But it doesn’t matter who plays who, as it is becoming more evident with each check in the win-column that this is truly an elite team that is poised to make a run at the Frozen Four.
Game Notes: BC goalie John Muse stopped 31 saves in the Championship game and saved 64-67 shots in the tournament… BC sophomore Barry Almeida scored the game winning goal at the start of the 3rd period for the Eagles… 10 different BC players registered a point in the Championship contest… BU junior Colby Cohen’s goal in the 3rd period was his team-leading 11th of the Season… This was the 58th annual Beanpot Tournament and BC’s ranks second on the tournament title list with this its 15th
