With the chance to join a championship-caliber team that has already lured Rasheed Wallace into their midst, Grant Hill said thanks but not thanks to the $1.9 million bi-annual exemption offered up by the Boston Celtics and instead will return to the Phoenix Suns in a two-year deal that, according to his agent Lon Babby, will pay Hill $3 million in the first year with a player option in the second year that will pay him $3.24 million.
I guess the chance to win a title was just not tempting enough for the 36 year old small forward who is going back to a team that already traded Shaquille O’Neal to the Cleveland Cavaliers and have been rumored to have had serious discussions about moving Amar'e Stoudemire as well. Hey, I guess not every basketball player needs to win a title.
According to Babby, Hill made the decision to stay in Phoenix "largely because he feels he has unfinished business there. The Suns placed their faith in him. He didn't want to leave Phoenix on a sour note."
According to Babby, Hill had narrowed his choices down to Phoenix, the New York Knicks (who had offered Hill the full mid-level exception of $5.8 million) and the Celts. Even though Doc Rivers and Ray Allen did their best to sell the virtues of donning the green to Hill, it just wasn’t enough. The 7-time All-Star who averaged 18.5 points per game in a career that has been plaques by injury, is going to see if he can play a full season for the second year in a row out in the desert.
