United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Assistant Secretary John Morton announced Thursday the federal government will perform 1,000 new workplace audits for businesses suspected of hiring individuals lacking a legal right for employment in the United States.

The audits consist of a meticulous review of each employer’s hiring records, which includes a verification of each employee’s I-9 forms. ICE stated the reasons for targeting specific business are related to investigative leads and intelligence, as wells as to public safety and national security.

“ICE is focused on finding and penalizing employers who believe they can unfairly get ahead by cultivating illegal workplaces. We are increasing criminal and civil enforcement of immigration-related employment laws and imposing smart, tough employer sanctions to even the playing field for employers who play by the rules,” said Assistant Secretary Morton.

According to the White House’s stated determination to sanction employers that hire undocumented workers, ICE is withholding the names and locations of the companies being audited until the audit is complete.

More assault on business instead of going after the Immigrants falsifying documents who are taking away jobs from legal citizens... We have to stop this assault on business, it is not proving to be an economic winner in the unemployment sector....

While some employers play by the rules, others have grown their capital exploiting hard working people, paying them wages that drive them to misery. Exactly because all of that is that we need an immigration reform that within others will make the hiring processes transparent and will allow people already in the U.S., to be legally employed.
