This post is part of the Glossary Series, a 100-day conversation designed to develop and clarify the language we use to describe online communication. As Year 2008 comes to a close, the emerging Glossary of Online Communication will be published along with a selection of the comments from my readership. I hope to see your comments among them.
Day 9: The Conversation
The Conversation: A term which relates generally to the entire exchange of information happening through online channels. Emails, text messages, blog posts, newzines, website columns, are all part of “the conversation.” Marketers look at how to get seen in “the conversation,” and online community builders try to bring lurkers “into the conversation.”
I’m glad we can’t actually hear all the words being flung around on the Internet. Then we’d have to call it "that noise!"
You can find great examples of conversations being supported by a number of creative applications. Try BlogCatalog’s directory, or go to Yahoo Groups and search for any topic under the sun. These are all conversations.

Comments
The term, "conversation," is coming up more and more in the discussions I have in business.
Rather than having meetings, sending proposals, or trying to close a sale, I am trying to shift some of my own business development strategies on having conversations.
I am also keenly aware that having conversations aren't always measurable. But I do know that my conversations are fostering creativity, developing new ways to do and conduct business, and creating new intellectual and capital wealth.
Maybe the end game in the business of conversations becomes part of doing some social good and helping a stranger at the other end of the phone line.
In having a conversation, I know I am helping someone and someone is helping me. Even if money never changes hands, the currency of just helping someone seems like a good way to give back and share in the universe.
