If you haven't noticed, Boomers are flooding onto social sites and entering blogging in numbers that should make teens quake in their Ugg boots. There's been some talk lately about Facebook faltering in the face of change, and it makes sense - sites that are initially populated by adolescents have a hard time making the transition when the demographic swings hard to the other side of the 1970s.
The site I'm talking about today, however, has no such problem. It was developed with the Boomer-or-thereabouts woman in mind. The thoughtfulness and regard for people who are not "digital experts" are easy to see in the site's usability.
This very active women’s site was launched in 2006 by Yana Berlin. Fabulously40.com provides women entering their fifth decade of life an entire planet of their own. While life as a blogger can feel isolated, Fabulously40 gives an option that instead makes women part of a community as they blog.
Participants also write “expert” pieces on various topics, which gives women a place to establish – or further – a voice in the blogosphere.
Advertising found on the site is minimal. It’s great to see this model being used – avoiding advertising doesn’t do much for your longevity as a business, but too much of it can kill an otherwise good website. On this site, I’ve never found any intrusive or inappropriate advertising. This speaks to good management. This is no small point for website owners.
On many of the bigger women-centered sites, I’ve been seeing more activity, posts, and forums about being in business. Fabulously40.com is no exception - it provides a number of points to enter the conversation. I found several blog posts on the site with great guidance on different areas of business, especially as it relates to women. There are posts for the work-at-home Mom, for the new entrepreneur, and for careers in transition, just to name a few.
I look forward to seeing Fabulously40.com grow in the years to come.
