Last week, in a first-of-its-kind pilot event, Vespa, the world’s most recognizable scooter brand, teamed with Continental Airlines at Newark Liberty International Airport to launch an alternative personal transportation program for the airline’s Liberty-based employees.
On April 24, more than 3,000 regional employees had the opportunity to discover how scooters can help reduce their personal carbon footprints while saving an owner up to $6,000 per year in everyday transportation costs. With soaring public transportation prices in the tri-state area, Vespa’s “nickel a mile” operating cost is an especially timely alternative for commuters.

The all-day eventincluded opportunities to experience the ease, convenience and fun of scooter riding and ownership through on-site product exhibits, safety demonstrations and test rides. The program also encourages employees to seriously consider reducing their transportation wheel count permanently with these ongoing benefits:
- Conveniently located scooter-only parking in Continental Airlines employee parking lots;
- Continental Airlines employees at Liberty will have the opportunity to be entered into six monthly drawings for a free Vespa LX 150 scooter;
- Special employee-only discounts for the entire range of Piaggio or Vespa scooters.
“At Continental we’re constantly exploring progressive new ways to cut both carbons and cost,” said Jon Roitman, vice president, Newark Liberty hub, Continental Airlines. “When we can offer our entire team easy-to-use new tools for reducing pollution and congestion while helping them save thousands of dollars per year, it’s a big win for everyone.”
In addition to pocketing more personal savings, Continental employees who shift vehicle miles to scooter miles also help reduce the region’s legendary congestion.
“As we saw in London following that city’s introduction of a congestion pricing model in 2003, more scooters on the road actually decreased traffic delay times,” said Paolo Timoni, president and CEO, Piaggio Group Americas, Inc. “Through this partnership, Continental is leading the way in good personal transportation citizenship, for its employees, for the region and for the environment.”
