'Up in the Air' reviews - what are the critics saying? - George Clooney's latest movie, Up in the Air, released wide on Christmas Day. With competition Christmas weekend from films such as Sherlock Holmes and Avatar, potential audiences have several movies to choose from when they decide to get out of the house and hit the cineplexes.  Some will base their choices partly on what professional reviewers are saying about the movies.  What are the critics saying about Up in the Air?

According to rankings collected at sites such as Metacritic.com and Rottentomatoes.com, as they say, "the critics rave."

Metacritic ranks the film an 83 out of 100 with 34 critics counted. This earns the movie their "Universal Acclaim" ranking.  The user score (site user comments), however, is only 6.4 out of 10, but this is with only 50 votes counted so far.

At Rottentomatoes, the film is given a 90% approval rating among all critics the site canvasses, with 91% among those it considers its top critics.  The total critical reviews counted to date on that site is 164.

What are some of the top critics saying about this movie based on the novel Up in the Air by Walter Kirn, and starring Clooney, Vera Formiga, and Anna Kendrick?  The film is directed by Jason Reitman (Juno) from a screenplay adapted by Reitman and Sheldon Turner. See some of the critics' comments below.  For the full review, click on the name of the publication.

Claudia Puig, USA Today:

"Timeliness can be tricky to pull off convincingly in movies. It's tough to capture an era while it's still happening, yet Up in the Air does so brilliantly, with wit and humanity."

Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly:

"Up in the Air is light and dark, hilarious and tragic, romantic and real. It's everything that Hollywood has forgotten how to do; we're blessed that Jason Reitman has remembered."

Peter Howell, Toronto Star:

"George Clooney has never seemed more vulnerable or more in tune with a role than he does in Up in the Air, a film that will be hard to beat for Best Picture come Oscar time."

Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times:

"Up in the Air...is a film for this time."

Ann Hornaday, Washington Post:

"Up in the Air is a timeless movie that's utterly of its time -- a movie of humor, heart and mind."

The movie is already enjoying attention by those who give out awards.  It has been nominted for 6 Golden Globe Awards:  Best Motion Picture, Drama; Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama (George Clooney); Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture (2--one for Vera Farmiga; one for Anna Kendrick); Best Screenplay, Motion Picture (Jason Reitman); and Best Director (Jason Reitman).
