Robert Pattinson on 'Letterman' and 'Regis and Kelly,' promoting 'New Moon' -- Robert Pattinson, actor and musician, has completed the New York double-punch in terms of promoting The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Wednesday night he appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman and Thursday morning he sat down and talked with Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa on Live with Regis and Kelly.

Letterman

Neither interview allowed Mr. Pattinson to break any news that fans of the popular actor wouldn't already know.  In his first appearnce on the CBS show, Robert Pattinson seemed nervous and mentioned that it was strange hearing screams from the audience, who were all sitting in the dark.

Mr. Letterman asked him about his career, and he spoke about playing a Viking in his first film, Ring of the Nibelungs and how he wore a wig and had his voice dubbed for the role.  He also explained the story fans know--of having dinner with a fan who waited outside his apartment every day when he was in Spain filming Little Ashes. He did add to this story telling that the girl took him to a restaurant that her parents owned, but they still made him pay.  Through Letterman's banter, Pattinson managed to get to the well-known (to fans) punchline to the story--that after he complained about everything in his life to the girl for some time over dinner, the girl never showed up outside his apartment again. He also recounted the story of the woman asking him to hold her baby and pretending to bite his/her head for a photo.

Mr. Letterman asked him about American accents for films and asked him to speak "American." Pattinson demonstrated by flatly saying the words "sidewalk" and "candy," saying that "candy" is a dead giveaway.  Interestingly, Mr. Pattinson calls his own accent, speaking "English."  He commented on how many more British actors are showing up in Los Angeles these days, even in the brief time since his arrival. Letterman mentioned how many Australians are also coming into the movies and how he wished they'd cut that out.

When he showed a magazine cover with Pattinson and co-star Kristen Stewart on the cover, Mr. Letterman outright asked if they are dating. "I've been cryptically avoiding that question," Robert answered.  Letterman moved on quickly, saying he didn't care one way or the other and asked him about a headline on the same cover about dresses.

David Letterman showed the now-expected "wrong" clip before they aired the fight scene between Edward Cullen and the Volturi from New Moon.

After the actor left, band director Paul Shaffer called Pattinson "charming," and Letterman quipped that he'd kept wanting to bite his neck.

Regis & Kelly

On Regis and Kelly, Mr. Pattinson seemed much more rested and relaxed.  The first thing they talked about was how Regis thought he'd been on the show before, but Kelly informed him that this was Pattinson's first visit.  Robert thought he'd been on the show before as well.  Regis Philbin asked the actor about how he got the role for the first movie in the franchise, Twilight.

Philbin and Ripa pointed out members of the audience called the "Twilight Moms," all wearing black shirts with letters in glitter on them.  Pattinson mentioned that the name is a misnomer for these women who often follow the actors from the films to their events. They always "look too young" to be moms, he said, and Mr. Philibin laughed and called the actor "smooth." The morning show aired the same clip from New Moon that was shown on Letterman the night before.

Regis told fans in the audience that the moment they've been waiting for is nearly here--New Moon would begin showing in theaters at 12:01 a.m. Friday morning.

After Mr. Pattinson left, Kelly Ripa made a point of telling the television audience that Robert Pattinson is "very gracious." Earlier during a commercial break, he had gone out into the audience and interacted with fans.
