Robert Downey, Jr. 'waxes' unique promotion of 'Sherlock Holmes' movie - A wax figure of actor Robert Downey, Jr. in character for his role as British detective, Sherlock Holmes, stood near the sign or Baker Street in the London Underground in December, 2009 to promote the film, Sherlock Holmes. Downey stars in the film with Jude Law who plays Dr. Watson. The address, 221b Baker Street, was the fictional home of the famous detective. The actual address is now home to the Sherlock Holmes Museum.

Appearing on The Late Show With David Letterman this week, Mr. Downey commented on a photo of the figure that Dave Letterman showed to the audience.  He remarked, "If you'll notice, the closer you get, the better it looks. From far away it could be anybody. That's kind of odd."

After the promotion of the film, the figure, which is dressed in a replica of a costume from the film, will go to Madame Tussaud's wax museum in London where it will be displayed in a scenario related to the movie.

The movie is directed by Guy Ritchie from a script by Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham, and Simon Kinberg from characters in the classic detective novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It runs 128 minutes and is rated PG-13 "for intense sequences of violence and action, some startling images and a scene of suggestive material."

Sherlock Holmes opens in the U.S. December 25, 2009.
