Werewolf clan from The Twilight Saga: New Moon / Summit
Readers and movie audiences of the popular Twilight series of books and films know that the second story of four, New Moon, initiates a plotline where male Quileutes from the Pacific Northwest turn, upon adolescence, into werewolves that protect human beings from clans of preying vampires. Author Stephenie Meyer writes scenes of Quileutes explaining the origins of this phenomenon to the human character, Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart. Swan has a long-time friend among the Quileutes, Jacob Black played by Taylor Lautner, who forms a romantic triangle with Swan and the brooding vampire, Edward Cullen, played by Robert Pattinson.
While many of the real Quileutes of the Pacific Northwest appear to appreciate the notoriety Meyer's novels have brought to them and welcome visiting fans, the Quileute Nation recently granted rare media access to their lands to Reelzchannel-TV for a program that helps explain the relevance of wolves in their heritage and creation story (needless to say, it does not involve werewolves). The Quileute believe they were originally transformed from wolves into human beings by a wandering Transformer. You can read more about the actual Quileute creation story, here.
In one segment of the television program, an elder sings and explains the wolf creation story. In another, a host visits a great-grandfather named Roy Black, Jr. and asks him playfully where "Jacob Black" is today. He replies that "he's out fishing" and tells a story of how he's greeted in Forks, Washington, these days (the town where much of the Twilight Saga is set) as "Jacob's grandfather." In another segment, actor Tinsel Korey, who plays "Emily" in New Moon, talks about her work with students in the Quileute Nation school.
The program aired as part of the "Twilight Weekly" series on Reelzchannel-TV. You can see video excerpts from the program at the Reelzchannel-TV website.
