'Precious' wins Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay - Screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher won his first Oscar Sunday night for adapting the novel Push by Sapphire to the film Precious directed by Lee Daniels.
In accepting his award, Mr. Fletcher said, "This is for everybody who works on a dream every day. Precious boys and girls everywhere."
The win was a bit of an upset, since expectations ran high that Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner might win for Up in the Air, based on the novel Up in the Air by Walter Kirn. The pair won the Golden Globe for Best Adapted Screenplay.
The award was the second Oscar won by the film. Mo'Nique won the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role.
Precious is about an abused teenager in Harlem who is pregnant with her second child and how a teacher at an alternative school tries to pull her out of her situation.
Mr. Fletcher's screenplay for Precious has won other awards as well--an Independent Spirit Award; a NAACP Image Award; and it was nominated for a BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) Award. Holding his Oscar, Fletcher, 39 thanked his parents and two sisters, and all who have believed in him.
Precious stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, and Sherri Shepherd.
Many audiences had a difficult time seeing Precious as it opened for weeks in limited release, then widened. The movie is available on DVD starting March 9, 2010.
