The road goes ever on?

Fans of the Lord of the Rings trilogy have long been waiting for news of The Hobbit and according to new reports, the filmmakers announced at Comic Con yesterday that it’s coming along; definitely part one is taking shape nicely, but they’re not sure where to split the film in two—or there might be three. Well, fans, apparently, they’re still working on the script, though Hugo Weaving is supposed to be on board, as well as Sir Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis. Bilbo’s part still up in the air, apparently, but Doctor Who’s David Tennant has been approached to take on the role of Bilbo. Maybe. There are even rumors that Viggo Mortensen might be willing to make a return to the films.

On the other hand, it seems the Tolkien family isn’t happy with New Line, as they have not paid the family the royalties they deserved; the family filed a lawsuit against the company that should, if things go their way, give control over the stories and what comes from them (movies and so forth) back into the hands of the Tolkiens.

So, it’s all still up in the air; we’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed, but if all goes well, I’m sure the final version—or versions—of The Hobbit, when/if they materialize, will not disappoint.

Peter Jackson denied this rumor days ago on Empire Magazine website. The script for The Hobbit is not even done yet, so they have not approached anyone about playing the part.

One can only hope and pray that the Tolkien family is successful in blocking the production of a movie version of Tolkien's "The Hobbit." After witnessing the horror-show peter jackson created and laughingly called an adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings", another debacle of that magnitude would would be unbearable.

I truly hope that New Line and the Tolkiens can come to some sort of amicable agreement. Unfortunately, that doesn't happen too often in Hollywood. I am a huge fan of the LOTR movies as well as the books, and although I'd LOVE to see a movie version of the Hobbit, I think JRR's family is way overdue in getting some kind of compensation and creative control in all of this. If they manage to stop production of the film, well, can't say I blame them. This was their father's life's work, and it's really criminal how insensitive New Line has been. Thanks for reporting on this, Julianne. Looking forward to future updates on the matter!
