Elissa Wilds’ debut novel, Between Light and Dark is a very interesting one; in it we meet the daughter of a movie star who wants nothing to do with her legacy, and yet, fate won’t let her do so. The night Laurell Pittman found out she had inherited her mother’s fortune, an even bigger surprise entered her life in the form of a tall, dark, handsome stranger, who took her breath away, and subsequently, held her hostage. His reason was unbelievable in that he didn’t care for her fortune, her possessions—no. The man, Axiom, claimed he was a Gray God—distrusted by both the light gods, and the dark—who is determined to help humanity, and thereby win a place on the heavenly council; that he is determined to win Laurell’s trust, in order that she may allow him to seduce her, and thereby, father a miraculous child—the fabled Earth Balancer—who will some day save the world from terrible, marauding demons.
Well, what girl wouldn’t think such a claim insane? Laurell certainly does; but she can find no way to free herself from the bizarre man and his accomplice, and so finds herself thrust into the center of an ancient battle, apprentice to a coven of witches, and being educated under fire in their ways, and those of her ancestors, left to her in the cryptic Book of Shadows she recently inherited from her grandmother.
Even as she witnesses the evil they’re sworn to fight, the bodies of the possessed and dead piling up around them, even as she begins training under the helpful hands of the coven, and having astral meetings with the mother she disdains, she finds the truth of Axiom’s words confirmed. Her mind tells her this is crazy, but with the help of a searing, ethereal attraction to Axiom that he calls the yearning, Laurell just can’t keep her hands off him.
A good thing, that, because there is evil afoot, and the growing bond between them just might be the only thing that saves her when the demons finally come for her.
Will Laurell ever stop scoffing at fate? Will she indeed mother humanity’s savior? Will Axiom finally be able to fight off his own dark half, or fall to the demons?
Part fantasy, part Charmed, part Hitchcock, part steamy love story, Florida's own Ms. Wilds did a fine job of balancing all aspects of this story, sprinkling it with a great host of characters that both fascinate, and in some cases, terrify, to produce a brew that only left this reader wanting more. What happens to Laurell and friends? You should know my answer to that by now: Pick up a copy of Elissa Wilds’ magickal first novel, at Amazon, the Dorchester Press site, or your local Barnes and Noble or Borders, and see for yourself!
