Eight-year-old Jeff is excited. He and his mother are flying from Newark to Los Angeles in February 1962. It will be Jeff's first flight. .
The United Airlines plane is scheduled to leave Newark at 9:00 p.m., make frequent stops, and arrive in Los Angeles at 3:00 p.m. the following day.
On the first leg of their trip, Jeff meets a flight attendant who had been in a Nazi concentration camp, a man who is attracted to his mother, another man who is ten-feet-tall, and the pilots. Chicken cordon bleu is served.
When they arrive in Pittsburgh, a snowstorm delays them and they stay in a hotel.
Then, they fly to Chicago where Jeff learns about time changes.
On the way to Des Moines, he meets another flight attendant who is kind and pretty. In the airport gift shop, he gets a toy plane.
In Denver, they transfer to another plane and fly first class the rest of the way.
The trip makes a lasting impression on Jeff.
