WOW. It has been a long long time since a new fantasy novel or writer has engrossed me so much. Thinking back to Robin Hobb and her Assasins trilogy.

This is one of those books that makes you wish you waited until the series was finished before starting in on it. I can't wait for the next installment.

This narrative within a narrative chronicles the early years of a man named Kvothe, told from his own wry and mostly self effacing point of view. There is a sly, clever humor interwoven throughout the novel; from the child's upbringing in a troupe of travelling players, to a period of years spent on the lawless streets of a dismal city-orphaned and alone.

A tale of the growth of a young man, in some ways wise, in many others sadly lacking basic principles. His attempts at wooing in particular carry a certain innocent charm.

Strong willed and lacking diplomacy, there are friends and villains alike who we can delight in young Kvothe's outwitting.

The tale is told by a middle aged man, who is about to give up on life, but enjoys the opportunity to set the truth before the world before he passes from it. The tender reminiscences of a man determined to share his story in all of it's highs and lows.

A scoundrel, a thief, a racontuer, a minstrel and musician. The many facets of what go into making a man of dread legend. Lover, fighter, magician. The hallmarks and cliches of high fantasy are all present, yet the telling is fresh and vibrant.  I would call this a must read for any who enjoy the worlds that Tolkien and Jordan have made so vibrantly real to so many fans.
