Death Troopers by Joe Schreiber

Death Troopers

Getting approved to write an official Star Wars novel is not an easy feat – unless you are one of the up and coming premier authors of horror thrillers like No Doors. No Windows., Chasing the Dead, or Eat the Dark. Joe Schreiber was given the opportunity to take a shot at writing the first Star Wars horror novel and he knocked it out of the park.

Death Troopers is set right before A New Hope takes place. The Empire is in full force and exerting their will on all the innocents. A prison barge carrying 500 prisoners breaks down before it reaches its destination. The only hope they have is to salvage parts from a derelict star destroyer that they come across but can’t communicate with. The Captain of the guard, Jareth Sartoris leads a boarding party to find the parts. Some of them don’t come back, some of them do – carrying something horrible that affects all on board in a horrible way. Kale and Trig Longo are teenagers caught up in the horror of the walking dead and must find a way to survive along with a small group of immune survivors until they can figure out a way to get by the infected, fix their ship, and return home.

Joe Schreiber is a master of creating a story that sucks you in, develops characters, builds suspense, and delivers on the horror. All of the elements of Star Wars including droids, familiar alien species, and the dreaded Empire are included to make this a must read for Star Wars fans. One thing that makes Schreiber’s stories so compelling is that you never know who is safe and who is not. The storyline flows very well including different antagonists and protagonists entering and exiting throughout the story. Schreiber does an excellent job to include gory details that we haven’t seen with other Star Wars novels to this point. He also creates imagery that gives the reader a sense of the overwhelming isolation that comes with deep space adventure much like Alien or 2001: A Space Odyssey. Joe Schreiber is working on another Star Wars adventure that is not a sequel to Death Troopers. The gore and detail of violence would make Death Troopers rated PG-13 on the MPAA scale.

Death Troopers is 234 pages long and includes an excerpt from the upcoming novel Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Outcast. It is available on October 13th and is published by Del Rey books.
