The “Twilight Over Portland” fan convention planned for this upcoming weekend has been canceled.
The event was scheduled for August 28-30 and was set to feature several actors from the hit movie Twilight, which was filmed in the Portland area last year. However, organizers from the fan site TalkingTwilight.com have canceled the event at the last minute.
Actor Gil Birmingham was among the cast members set to appear at the event. He posted on his Twitter account, “It was cancelled due to the investor backing out. Money issue.” He also called the cancellation a “bummer.”
In a statement to the Examiner, Elissa Cotton, founder of TalkingTwilight.com, said, “Due to circumstances beyond our control the event has been rescheduled to March.”
However, fans of Twilight still have an opportunity to meet with one of the movie’s stars this weekend. Actor Peter Facinelli, who plays vampire Carlisle Cullen in the Twilight Saga movies, will appear at the Jantzen Beach SuperCenter on Saturday, August 29 at noon. He will hold an autograph and photo session with fans, with sales benefiting Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. The canceled “Twilight Over Portland” convention would have also benefited Doernbecher.
Fans will also have another chance to mingle with the stars of Twilight next year at the Official Twilight Fan Convention.
Earlier this month, Summit Entertainment and Creation Entertainment announced a partnership to put on a series of official Twilight fan conventions over the next three years.
The Official Twilight Fan Convention will be making a stop in Portland October 1-3, 2010.
Details about the Portland stop have not been released at this time, but other stops in the tour include on-stage appearances by stars from the Twilight movies, exclusive footage screenings, panel discussions, themed parties, musical performances, costumes and trivia contests, auctions, autograph sessions, and photo opportunities. You can bet there will also be plenty of Twilight swag available for purchase, too.
The Official Twilight Fan Conventions will also be held in more than 20 other cities. Elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest, a convention is planned in Seattle for January 15-17, 2010.

Although the convention is postponed, we'll still be providing tours of the actual filming locations from Twilight. We have tours departing at 10 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Contact us for more details: info@portlandmovietours.com.
The "Portland Movie Tours" tour was so fun! My husband and I had a great time taking pictures at Carver's Diner and visiting the High School where Bella went to school along with other great locations. It's definately a fun and worthwhile tour and a great alternative to the convention this weekend.
