Mrs. P's Magical Library -- the place for kids to enjoy safe, free children's literature -- is celebrating its one year anniversary today.
The site was founded one year ago by Dana Plautz, Clay Graham and Kathy Kinney and is now headquartered right here in Portland.
Plautz, Graham and Kinney knew that fewer and fewer kids are reading these days, and that parents have less time to read to their kids. That's why the trio wanted to create a safe place for kids to explore, discover and enjoy classic literature, with the hopes that children would develop a life-long love of reading.
The stories in Mrs. P's collection are classic children's stories that have proven staying power over the years -- such as Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, The Velveteen Rabbit, and Hansel and Gretel.
Rather than simply offering an online "audio book," MrsP.com virtually recreates the feel of storytime -- with Mrs. P (portrayed by Kinney, who you may remember from TV's "The Drew Carey Show" and other projects) reading the books. The stories are accompanied by original artwork created by both new and established artists (many based right here in Portland). And the site is designed to encourage kids to read along (not just listen and look).
Plus, MrsP.com is an ad-free site (so it's perfectly safe for kids to surf, without the risk of discovering untoward links and advertisements, which are known to lurk on the Internet). Instead, the site gains financial support from sponsorship arrangements. MrsP.com also donates 10% of its profits to groups that promote literacy.
The stories are always available for free on MrsP.com, but they can be purchased for a small fee on iTunes and in other platforms so you can view them elsewhere, such as on iPods, DVD players, etc.
