Soulstice: Luna's Dream is the first installment in a new four book series. The plot is reminiscent of the popular Twilight series with its forbidden vampire-human romance theme, but with the gender roles reversed. In Luna's Dream, the vampire is a fifteen-year-old girl, Luna Tremaine, who falls for the new human in town, Paul James. Of course, there's plenty of action and violence with the "bad vampires" who are after Paul James. Luckily Luna has the assistance of her BFF Lily Burgoyne to help her save the day.
This story is told in the first person perspective of Luna. Unlike most books, in this case, the co-author really is fifteen. That fact lends an authenticity, both in terms of the slang used and the feel for how a teenager's mind works. (Hint: Lots of random jumping around from topic to topic.) There's also a genuine sense of excitement tinged with fear in the interactions between Luna and her love interest, Paul James.
However, these same features make the writing a bit tedious to read at times. The first one hundred pages are chock-full of "vampire facts," but the redundancy and randomness made it hard to really get into the story. Eventually the action picks up and the plot becomes more engaging, albeit somewhat predictable. This would have been a much better book with a little more editing and proofreading.
The book may be purchased via the Soulstice website. The movie version is slated for release in 2011. The screenplay is written by the book's co-author Lance Dow.
