Review: Screw Cupid - The Sassy Girl's Guide to Picking Up Hot Guys

How depressing is it to be a single woman in Kansas City? When it comes to the single life, Forbes.com ranks KC 37th out of the country's 40 largest cities. You know those hot guys are out there, so why can't you meet them? Well, now there's a book to help a girl out.

If the title doesn't clue readers in, the dedication should: "To those who think it's lame to wait for the Hot Guy to come to you - this is for you." It's supposed to be easy for women, especially the pretty ones. Make a little eye contact and bat your eyelashes, smile seductively, throw in the head toss and hair flip, and pow! He's yours! Sounds good in theory, but it doesn't work quite so neatly in practice, does it? Not all women are super models, and it seems like few men realize that the eyelashes, smile, and hair are signals. So have do you get the ball rolling?

It's a big question, and author Samantha Scholfield has an answer. It's time to be pro-active, and in Screw Cupid: The Sassy Girl's Guide to Picking Up Hot Guys, she puts her own experiences to work, searching for the best ways to make the first move and break the ice. She talks about not only the best methods, but also the worst methods.

Forget waiting around for the guy to make the first move, especially if you're out with a group of friends. And the overly-direct approach can also backfire, which answers a question that most women have asked at some point. "Why is it that the guys I'm not trying to attract are always the most interested?"

Scholfield does believe in being pro-active, and her techniques take advantage of two parts of human nature. People tend to want what's not available, and they're more comfortable when they feel in control of the situation. Screw Cupid offers ways to make the first move natural, with a variety of ways to open the conversation and keep it flowing. For some, it may seem like manipulating the situation, but Scholfield offers common-sense advice that works.

Not only is it good advice, but it's entertaining and fun to read. Screw Cupid doesn't feel like a how-to book, it feels like a conversation with a friend. Scholfield describes her own experiences, good and bad, and doesn't hesitate to baldly state where she went wrong. Scholfield's been through the same dating obstacle course that so many of us face, and it's comforting to know that it's possible to succeed. Screw Cupid is one of the most fun and useful dating guides for women in a long time.
