Today, Hartford Books Examiner offers a spirited welcome to Richard Haffey.
Richard Haffey is a freelance writer, businessman and environmentalist from Connecticut and Cape Cod, where he and his wife make their home and enjoy their children and friends. He has written educational materials in the past and privately published works of fiction and poetry. The novel Love Song is his first publicly released work.
While Love Song is not a seasonal book, it does confront a topic that often manifests itself during the holidays: grief over the loss of a loved one. (See the author’s introduction below.) As the relatable protagonist, Jay Alfred is forced to reckon with the all-too-human emotions of despair and anger when fate unexpectedly disrupts his life. As he struggles for clarity, readers find themselves whisked along on a poignant journey that just may inspire them to reflect upon their own life experiences.
Response to the book has been passionate, and the following are just a few of the comments that readers have offered:
“I never knew someone could love (and successfully impart in words) that deeply. The Alfreds now live in my heart.” -- Joan G. Copiague, NY
"Thank you for the gift of Love Song. It waited for a while on my night table but the time was right a week ago and the story became my bedtime reading. I was toughly engaged and loved the story. It was a little sad to reach the end and have no continuation the next night. My life experience is better for having read the story." -- Tom P. Santa Barbara CA
Now, Richard Haffey introduces us to Love Song…

Inspired by T. S. Eliot’s poetry and John Field’s music, Love Song befriends us to Jay and Abby Alfred. Jay withstands family pressures and medical opinions to preserve Abby’s dignity and health after she abruptly slips into an inexplicable comatose condition. While the turmoil of the summer of 1969 rages outside their Manhattan apartment, Jay fashions an environment of home care. Convinced she can still hear, Jay arranges a playlist of the music Abby loves and uses it to pace the events of each day and to maintain her inner sense of order and tranquility.
Holidays are always hard on those of us who have lost a loved one, especially in those first few holiday seasons. Love Song places in our hearts and hands a healing reminder of the love we have been blessed to share and can brighten our saddened holiday with the splendor of such memories.
