Father's Day book recommendations from Amazon

Father's Day Book Recommendations Amazon

With just under a week left to complete your Father’s Day shopping, here are some suggestions Amazon. They have listed several man-friendly titles that are currently hot downloads for the Kindle but are also available in traditional formats. From political thrillers to inspirational guides, there’s sure to be something for everyone.

1) Showing Up for Life: Thoughts on the Gifts of a Lifetime (Broadway Business, $22.00) by Bill Gates Sr. with Mary Ann Mackin. The father of Microsoft’s co-founder offers several dozen brief narratives on life events that have helped to influence his thinking and shape his morals—and those of his children. Recalled in chronological order, these remembrances showcase the life lessons learned by “showing up” day after day.

2) The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon (Doubleday $27.50) by David Grann. A staff writer for the New Yorker, Grann examines British explorer Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett’s mysterious search to find the city of Z, site of an ancient Amazonian civilization that may or may not have existed. Fawcett never returned, and Grann’s impassioned research led him to retrace the explorer’s steps into the jungle.

3) The Snowball: Warren Buffet and the Business of Life (Bantam, $35.00) by Alice Schroeder. Hand-picked by the man himself, Schroeder, a former managing director at Morgan-Stanley, strips away the mystery that has shrouded Buffet, revealing both his personal vices and the investment strategies that have helped him to become the world’s richest man.

4) The Think Big Manifesto: Think You Can’t Change Your Life (and the World)? Think Again (Wiley, $22.95) by Michael Port with Mina Samuels. Touted as “the handbook to your personal revolution,” bestselling author Pitt shows readers how to think big—and, in doing so, how to change their lives to maximize potential. Broken down into ten fundamental principles and a personal code of conduct, your revolution starts right here.

5) The 8th Confession (Little, Brown and Company, $27.99) by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro. The only Women’s Murder Club novel of the year, this one finds Lindsay Boxer and the gang investigating a string of murders committed against San Francisco’s wealthiest and most high-profile citizens. Meanwhile, reporter Cindy Thomas finds herself looking into the death of a homeless man only to realize that there’s more to the story than anybody realized. This is another page-turner from one of America’s best-loved authors.

6) The First Tycoon (Knopf, $37.50) by T.J. Stiles. Publishers Weekly called this book “the first complete, authoritative biography” of Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt, the American tycoon. Vanderbilt rose from boatman to builder of the nation’s largest fleet of steamships to the lord of a railroad empire. Throughout his successes, he also faced struggles in his personal relationships—his son was addicted to gambling and he was abusive toward his wife. This book illuminates his story in its entirety.

7) First Family (Grand Central Publishing, $27.99) by David Baldacci. The follow-up to the #1 New York Times best-seller Simple Genius features characters Sean King and Michelle Maxwell—former Secret Service Agents turned investigators. They are called in by the First Lady to investigate the abduction of a child from Camp David (the presidential retreat) during a party turned public relations nightmare. The line between friend and foe proves to be significantly blurred in this race against the clock.

8) The Way Home (Little, Brown and Company, $24.99) by George Pelecanos. This thriller has received mixed reviews but most parties agree that Pelecanos makes a strong case for juvenile-prison-reform. By highlighting how a poorly run system can lead to unjustifiably harsh consequences for petty crimes, the author causes readers to think as they absorb the story of Chris Flynn—a former delinquent set upon turning his life around who finds himself in possession of fifty thousand dollars stolen by a pair of ex-cons.

While the prices provided are for hardcover editions, Amazon is currently selling all eight titles as Kindle downloads for the price of $9.99. Readers looking to learn more about the Kindle should click here. Happy shopping!
