True education means going past religion

Organized religion is the frozen thought of man, out of which he builds temples and churches, it has become a solace for the fearful, an opiate for those who are in sorrow. But God or truth is far beyond thought and emotional demands. Parents and teachers who recognize the psychological processes which build up fear and sorrow should be able to help the young to observe and understand their own conflicts and trials.(Education & the Significance of Life (Page 37)

In perhaps one of the most earth shattering philosophical tomes written in the 20th Century, Jiddu Krishnamurti, an Indian born Hindu who was hand picked by the Theosophical Society to become the next World Teacher, and who walked away from tens of thousands of dedicated followers to find his own path of individual enlightenment, levels hundreds of years of doctrinal religions as the means for the spiritual salvation of the human race. True education, he argues, is when an individual comes to understand the movement of her mind, her emotions, and her spirit, to engage the world without fear or attachment, to interact with other human beings without image, without prejudice, without cause or suspicion.

Krishnamurti left no quarter for governments, for religions, or for any organized system of thought (including his own). He would often prod his audience not to take his word, to search for themselves, to draw their own conclusions, but to face facts without fear or predetermination. In a time when children get left behind like refugees despite lofty programs with high sounding names, Krishnamurti's challenge of education as a movement to free the human mind from all attachment and systems of belief, to truly engage human relationships as active organisms in the moment, make the incense rituals and manratic hymns of all the churches in the world, in all the flavors of every religion, seem as arbitrary and silly to the purpose of spiritual enlightenment as the command to "Duck and Cover" does now to those who know the destructive force of a nuclear bomb.

Right education comes with the transformation of ourselves. We must re-educate ourselves not to kill one another for any cause, however righteous, for any ideology, however promising it may appear to be for the future happiness of the world. We must learn to be compassionate, to be content with little, and to seek the Supreme, for only then can there be the true salvation of mankind. (Education & the Significance of Life, Page 50)

Education of this magnitude is a life challenge for each person and it's never too late or too early to start diving into knowing oneself completely.

    Jiddu Krishnamurti y Las Organizaciones.
