Who is "Jade?"
Jade, the author of Secretly Bound from Pursuit Publishing, is something of a mystery. We do know she was born in Indiana, following the Hoosier literary tradition of Theodore Dreiser, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Philip Jose Farmer, Laurell K. Hamilton, and others. We also know she now resides in The Netherlands...much like the main character in Secretly Bound, who is also named Jade. What is harder to discern is where fact ends and where fiction begins. If "Jade" is a pen name, the author's real name has not been made public.
In the novel, Jade and her wife Jessica live in the Netherlands (where same-gender marriages are legal) with their young son. Jessica desperately wants to have another child, but she's having trouble getting pregnant again. Jessica's increasing disappoint creates a rift between them, leading Jade down a dangerous path. She seeks to ease her loneliness by flirting with a woman she meets on an online social network. What follows is a tense blend of romance, sensuality, and action with a surprising twist at the end.
Fans of Anais Nin will appreciate the way Jade (the author) weaves the story of Henry and June into her narrative. While the book is not available at the St. Joseph County Public Library yet, it's worth seeking out. The paperback is available through the Pursuit Publishing website (see link above).
For couples seeking an intensely sensuous, heart-pounding reading experience, this book would make an excellent Valentine's Day gift.
