Most people who have heard of Pat Tillman probably already have immense respect for the football player turned soldier.
That respect will increase dramatically upon reading Jon Krakauer's "Where Men Win Glory."
Krakauer paints a vivid portrait of Tillman's character, which led the independent thinker to give up a lucrative National Football League career and a beautiful young wife to join the Army after 9/11. That decision ultimately leads to Tillman's 2004 death in Afghanistan by friendly fire.
But the book is about much more than Tillman. Krakauer also gives the reader a detailed history of the Afghan conflict, the Bush administration's motives for entering two wars, and the Army's efforts to use Tillman for propaganda purposes and its later attempts to cover up the true circumstances of his death.
In short, this book has something for nearly everyone -- including lovers of history, sports and politics.
But at the heart of the story is Pat Tillman, who deserves all of our respect.
