The Wednesday deaths of bestselling authors J.D. Salinger and Howard Zinn appear to be boosting interest in the books that made them famous.
Salinger's classic novel "The Catcher in the Rye," which was first released in 1951, is no. 5 on the Amazon.com bestseller list. It tells the tale of troubled adolescent Holden Caulfield.
Zinn's at-times controversial "A People's History of the United States" was just one spot behind at no. 6. The textbook, which focuses on social rather than political and economic history, was first published in 1980.
The appearance of these two landmark books, which have been around for decades, on the Amazon Top 10 list is almost certainly due to the authors' death this past Wednesday and the publicity that created.
Salinger was 91. Zinn was 87. The continued strong sales of their books shows that both men left behind quite a legacy.
