If I were to dream in music, I’d dream of stepping into Van Gogh’s painting of wheat sheaves and a rising moon and I’d listen to the music of Bobby Long. I’d dream that we friends and fans all gathered in this wheat field of gold where the summer sun glistened and the winds brushed melodies through our hair. And Bobby would sit on a blanket in the center of the field with the sun casting sparkles on his blue-green eyes and the wind feathering through his hair and play his acoustic guitar and sing the songs that speak to us – songs we dream of – songs we live in. We’d listen to Bobby because he’s a storyteller, a troubadour, a mourner of happiness, love, and life. We’d listen to “Two Years Old,” and “A Stranger Song” and “The Bounty of Mary Jane” and “Dead and Done.” We’d listen to these songs over and over because they are all songs about the depths of life that are painful and haunting. They resonate with us because they are raw and ragged and speak the truth without hiding behind pretty words or false images.
If I were to dream in music, I’d drink in the words and lyrics of Bobby Long and let them soothe my aching, parched soul until I can breathe whole again. I would become the trees, the leaves, the grass, the hills, the sky. I would become the memory of lost lives, lost loves and spinning doorways.
If I were to dream in music, I, along with his other friends and fans, would fall into Bobby Long’s chords and strings and fingers and frets and stay there all day until the rising moon came and whisked me away into the worlds and melodies of the stars. For I am sure, that’s where I’d find the soul of Bobby Long.
