Patti Smith, "Changing Of The Guards," June 20, 2007
Patti Smith was born on this day in 1946. Her influence as the "Godmother of Punk" cannot be underestimated. Since her earliest days as a performer, her career has been connected to Bob Dylan in various ways. Below is only a small part.
One of her early poems was called "Dylan's Dog." Besides covering a variety of Dylan songs in concert, Smith twice released them on her albums - "Wicked Messenger" on Gone Again, and "Changing Of The Guards" on Twelve.

In 1974, Smith reviewed Dylan's Planet Waves album for Creem magazine. Dylan asked Smith to be part of the 1975 Rolling Thunder Revue, soon after the release of her debut album, Horses. A recently published 1977 interview with Smith recalls why she declined. (Note: these articles feature adult language). After a series of losses, including the death of her husband Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5, Dylan asked Patti to tour with him in December, 1995. Near the end of the tour, Dylan and Smith would duet on "Dark Eyes." On November 9, 2006, Patti appeared at Avery Fisher Hall as the final act at a benefit concert featuring Dylan's music. In 2007, Smith hosted a Dylan podcast.
