Bob Dylan and David Bowie

(Virgin Records US)

David Robert Jones was born on January 8, 1947.  He changed his name to David Bowie  in 1966, after another British singer named David Jones found massive success with the pop band, The Monkees. Mick Ronson, Bowie's guitarist during his "glam-rock" phase (1970-1973), was part of Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue in 1975 and 1976.

Bowie's 1971 album, Hunky Dory, was originally released on RCA Records.  It included a song entitled "Song For Bob Dylan." Dylan has been quoted as saying he liked the song. You can see a photograph of Bowie and Dylan together here.

The track was recorded in April, 1971, at Trident Studios in London.  It was produced by Ken Scott "assisted by the actor." The actor was, of course, Bowie.

Hunky Dory album credits:

David Bowie - vocals, guitar, alto and tenor saxophone, piano
Mick Ronson - guitar, vocals, Mellotron, arrangements
Rick Wakeman - piano
Trevor Bolder - bass, trumpet
Mick Woodmansey - drums

Soupy Sales also shared Bowie's birthday. The TV personality was born in 1926, and died last year.  Sales' sons, Tony and Hunt Sales, were members of  Bowie's Tin Machine project. The brothers were also the rhythm section on Iggy Pop's 1977 album, Lust For Life, which was co-produced by Bowie.
