Favorite lunch cruises with your boat: San Francisco's Pier 1.5

Port of San Francisco's Pier 1.5 new guest dock.

This is the first in a series of articles about restaurants with docks that provide destinations for a lunch cruise.

One of the great joys of boating is treating friends and business associates to a water adventure where they can experience new sights and a different way of life. Tops in places to go and things to do with guests on your boat is a lunch cruise: boating to a restaurant with a dock for lunch. The food just tastes better, and the entire experience raises lunch to a new level. Anyone can drive there; only special people boat there.

Perhaps the best boating lunch destinations anywhere in the world are right here on San Francisco Bay. The spectacular views from the water, the great weather, and the richness and variety of the food can not be matched elsewhere on this planet.  Perhaps best among of the best destinations is Pier 1.5, the new public guest dock built and maintained by San Francisco Waterfront Partners.   Almost next door to the Ferry Building Marketplace, you can virtually take your boat around the world. With just a few steps from your mooring, you can visit restaurants offering cuisines of Peru, Vietnam, the Mediterranean, Mexico, and, of course, the full scope of the US, from hot dogs to clam chowder. They are: La Mar Cebicheria Peru, the Slanted Door, MarketBar, the Southwestern Grill, Taylor’s Refresher, the Hog Island Oyster Co., and the San Francisco Fish Company. If that is not enough, you can snack at a wine, cheese, and bread bar, and, for dessert, get a latte at coffee bar or a gelato.

Sushi is out, ceviche is in at the ceviche bar at La Mar Cebicheria Peruana on Pier 1.5

There is even an ATM machine at Pier 1.5 in case you need cash. Stays at Pier 1.5 are limited to 3 hours. If you want to stay overnight in San Francisco, see my post about visiting San Francisco in your boat. Very nice article! Just a small correction: the public access boat launch at Pier 1 1/2 was actually built and is maintained by San Francisco Waterfront Partners, which redeveloped Piers 1 1/2, 3 and 5 for the Port and now operates that space.

SFWP decided to build the boat launch as a public amenity, for all to use. Watch for water taxis in the future!

Thanks, PJ. I made the correction. Let me know when you are ready to run the water taxi.

Pier 1.5 broke in half within 2 months of opening (Feb 09) and is currently broken in half again (April 2010). Love the location and proximity, but the design appears to have been done by people with little idea about swells, tides, wakes. 2x6 wooden connecters just won't do.
