Herschel Walker’s morsels on politics and football
POSTED May 12, 2:40 AM
When you first talk to former NFL running back Herschel Walker, he can seem quiet and reserved. But, just like some of his legendary gridiron runs, once he breaks free on a conversation topic, there’s no stopping him.

We had a chance to catch up with Walker last week, when the former Dallas Cowboys/Minnesota Vikings/Philadelphia Eagles/New York Giants star was in town to not only promote his new book, “Breaking Free: My Life With Dissociative Identity Disorder,” but also to accept an award from the Substance Abuse and Mental
AP
Health Services Administration.

“I follow politics very closely,” Walker said. “But one thing is sad: Politics has become about mudslinging rather than solving issues.” Walker’s got a particular problem with Congress, which he thinks is focusing on the wrong issues.

“I strongly think that any athlete who takes steroids should be outright banned, but I don’t think Congress should be worried about whether a guy is taking steroids or not.” Walker also dissed Congress’ desire in February to look into the New England Patriots’ spying on the defensive signals of other teams. “There are people out there who are starving, who need health care. Why is Congress wasting its time on steroids and ‘Spy-Gate’?”

Walker wouldn’t share his opinion of President Bush or announce whom he’ll vote for in 2008, but one thing was clear: He thinks that every American should support our commander in chief … no matter what.

“I’m an athlete, and most athletes understand that although you may not like the quarterback on your team, you support that quarterback until he’s not there,” Walker said. “If you don’t support him, it gives your opponent a chance to come harder at you because he sees a weakness there.”

We couldn’t let Walker go without asking him how our beloved Washington Redskins will do this year.

“I think they’re going to do OK,” he said. “I’ll tell you what: People may not like [Redskins owner] Dan Snyder, but the man is trying to be a winner.”
