The O’s are limping into their final series of the year with their ironically titled Fan Appreciation Weekend at the Yard Friday night.
Most fans and media outlets checked out of the Orioles 2008 season about a month ago. This week, The Baltimore Sun got an early jump on the annual “should Brian Roberts get traded this offseason?” debate. Check out their piece here.
Just for fun, let’s say Roberts does go in the Fall. The birds have announced plans to try to resign him, but at 31 B Rob will probably balk at another long term deal. He’s been a part of previous “rebuilding” efforts in Baltimore and he probably doesn’t want a part of another.
Perhaps the Yankees’ current 2B Robinson Cano can be the future 2B for the birds?
A trade within the division may seem unlikely, but Cano, who has worn out his welcome in New York , may be as good a fit for the O’s as Brian Roberts is for the New York Yankees.
As for Cano, he will be 26 years old in October. He’s coming off of a weak season, batting only .264, but he hit a stellar .342 in 06 and.306 in 07. He’s got some pop for a second baseman as well, clubbing between 15 and 19 homers in each of the last three years.
As a young player, Cano makes sense for a team that is rebuilding. His youth also suggests that his best days as a player are ahead of him.
As for his contentious relationship with Yankees manager Joe Girardi, it seems that Cano’s attitude has been lackadaisical but he hasn’t exactly been a locker room poison. An escape from the bright lights of the Big Apple and a no nonsense manager like Dave Trembley may be just what Cano needs.
Is a straight up swap of 2Bs within the AL East likely? No. I know we’d all miss Brian Roberts for his hustle, his philanthropy, and most of all, his dimples. It would be tough to see him in those hated pinstripes.
But the last month of Orioles baseball has highlighted that the team will not compete in 2009. They may not be able to compete in the toughest division in baseball in 2010. If they are ever to have a Tampa Bay-like turnaround, they’re going to have to get young. Perhaps Robinson Cano can be a part of that youth movement.
