Weird Wednesday with Wally - A double dose with Wacky Packages

I've already done a column for Weird Wednesday this week, but hey what the heck, there's enough weirdness for another article. People tend to equivocate value with age. If something is very old it has to be worth money, and if something is not old then it isn't . Well that is sometimes true and sometimes not true at all.

Wacky packages 2
These bring good money in complete sets

There are other factors that make a collectible  valuable and demand is on the top of the list.

Take for example the items shown here which are stickers put out by the Topps Gum co. called "Wacky Packages" These were fun parodies on famous ad campaigns and a lot of fun to collect as kids.

We had such a blast being dumb with these as kids and sticking them in the most inappropriate places, that the mere mention of them today can light up a former collector.

A good rule of thumb for when an item becomes collectible if in fact an item is going to make it into the arena is this: An item starts becoming collectible when the generation that had it growing up can afford to purchase it as young adults, usually their early 20s. It increases in value, (again depending on demand) when the generations income increases as they climb the income ladder. A collectible will usually have been something that was a childhood favorite such as the Wacky Packages I refer to here.

A scarce collectible may or may not have been produced in large numbers, but to acheive a high value a collectible should be somewhat  scarce. There are different factors that make an item rare on the market place but the most often heard phrase with something like these is, "my mom threw all of mine out when she cleaned my room". You'll hear the same statement about comic books and baseball cards.

Thanks for reading.
