Painters are truly a different breed, take for instance (from Wikipedia) Michelangelo who despite his low opinion of painting, created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
Consider Van Gogh who's his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life, during which time he cut off part of his left ear following a breakdown in his friendship with Paul Gauguin. After this he suffered recurrent bouts of mental illness, which led to his suicide.
I would bet that the first artist whoever picked up a paintbrush thought, "What can I create that's completely bizarre? While Michelangelo & Van Gogh are household names, their works are unobtainable by the average person. However if your looking for something fun to invest in with the prospect of a profit for your efforts, there are many worthy artists well practiced in the strange, who's works are very affordable.
Here are a few examples I've found. Above right the Monkey with masks is actually an untitled oil on canvas by Cyrus Baldridge, a known and listed artist. I found this at the Brimfield antiques show for only $60. Perhaps the weirdest thing about it is that I let it sit there, for it was surely a steal at that price, but it was the July opener and the day was a 95 degree scorcher. I didn't
feel like carrying it back to my car. Lazy me!
The next painting I actually do own, much to my wife's dismay. It's untitled, stands 4ft tall and is signed K Crompton, it's dated 1968. This disturbing painting is well done but has two small tears in the canvas. I call it Earth Goddess from the Acid Trip. Price - $1500 should anyone be interested.
My favorite painting featured in this article is a 1755 painting signed and dated by Gilbert. It's an "End of Times" theme with all of the 7 signs depicted from the Book of Revelations in the Bible. I found this again at the Brimfield MA show for $985. The reason for the low price was that the painting had extensive restoration work done in 1873, still to be able to own such a masterpiece for only $975, I thought was a bargain.
End of Times dated 1755, signed Gilbert
Wouldn't it be amazing if with the purchase of such incredible works one could somehow steall 5 minutes of what the artist was thinking at the time? But I guess somethings are better left to our imaginations. Weird!
