Rene asks: I have 2 very old (over 90 yrs. old) stoneware wine jugs with holes on the bottom front for pouring. They are huge and stand 32" tall and are 20" in diameter. I'd be happy to send a picture to you. I would like an appraisal but am not willing to pay if you cannot decide what exactly it is. They came from my great grandparents and I would like to keep them in the family but need to insure them if they are valuable.
AW says: Those are great wine jugs, I'm going to assume there are no major breaks since you haven't indicated any serious damage. These are turn of the century circa 1890s - 1910s. What I love about them are the following, the size, the wonderful form and the ear or handles. They are very collectible to stoneware collectors, decorators and antiques people, so they have wide appeal.
Date range: 1890s-1910s
Retail value: $275-$325 each.(top price)
Wholesale value: $125 each. (The midrange price you could expect to achieve at a well advertised live auction. The price that is most often realized)
Quick sale value: $50-$75 each. The price your likely to get if you have to sell your item immediately and your prospective customer is aware of this.
Common trade terminology: Stoneware jugs, large stoneware wine jugs, large pottery jugs.
Nicknames or slang terms: N/A
In most cases, I believe it would be beneficial for your to give the prospective buyer a link to this page, and to bookmark it via your favorite bookmarking service.
Care and storage tips: I would not keep them in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures for a long time. Many people display this kind of stoneware outside, but that should only be done with stoneware that is ALREADY damaged.
