Well, if your one of those, don't feel so bad, most of us missed the boat, including me and I'm an auctioneer and should have known better! The boat I'm talking about is the barge that floated right on by stacked with millions of "Obama Wins" newspapers priced from 50 cents to $1.50 each. That boat.
These are selling on eBay right now for crazy money! The highest I've seen so far is the NY Times at $177.50, it has 22 bids and the auction ends in just over an hour. There's a link to the auction page linked below the photo if you want to see what it finishes at.
You think your kicking yourself right now, how do you think the publisher of the NY Times feels? If only they could get that kind of money once a year for an edition, they'd never have to worry the financial woes of a print newspaper ever again!
To demonstrate just how nuts this red hot market is right now, the same paper is for sale via a buy it now for $89.00
USA Today's issue is priced for $19.99 from certain sellers in the Buy it Now format, but it's at auction from several other vendors at over $25.00 each and the bidding is still going on!
Obama's hometown paper the Chicago Tribune is selling at $49.00 via Buy It Now, but there is a lot of 400 for a $999.00 starting bid, and yes, it does have a bid already!
Geez! I knew he was serious about getting the economy back on track, but this is ridiculous!
The great thing is, a lot of people are going to make extra money because they had the intuition to pick up some extra papers, or an extra 400, (OK, that's a little greedy, and maybe shady too) and they got them straight to market. Can't beat eBay for that!
This is the epitome of market demand driving up prices.
Every time I pull out that tired old cliche, "it's not how old an item is, it's how much demand there is for it", this is what I mean.
Everytime I say, "people collect things of that are classics and of historic importance", this is what I mean.
Everytime I say those kinds of things, I'm usually pointing to something I didn't get a chance to invest in until after the Honeymoon was over. I'm may be an excellent appraiser, a lively auctioneer and an antiques dealer with the heart of a treasure hunter, but truth be known I'm not much of a speculator.
What's that? You say your a speculator? Your a gambler and would jump on somethig like this in a heartbeat if you only had a second chance? If that's the case, there's still a chance to make some cake. Here's how: Just march yourself right over to eBay, find yourself an Obama paper that's priced in the $10.00 -$20.00 range and flip it.Or buy a whole bunch of them and flip em all!
It's suddenly not sounding like such a sure thing anymore is it? Not when you look at it that way. But this is exactly what's happening right now. At the time I'm writing this article there are 1,952 Obama newspapers up on eBay for sale. The price ranges are from $10 to $2000. I'm not kidding, right now, someone has a Charlotte Observer up with a starting bid of $100, but a Buy IT Now of $2000!
I think they've been a little too close to the model airplane glue myself, but, hey, what do I know, I'm not a speculator.
There are people from all over the world that want these and are paying stupid money. If your thinking of making your strike by jumping in a little late, it can be done, but let me give just one bit of advice.
This type of inferno market cools off just as fast as it heats up. When it does, these historic papers will still be worth having and holding on to, but they won't bring the kind of money that they're bringing now for a long time.
Some people will look at this as a golden opportunity, and others will no doubt see it as opportunism.
Me, I'm just happy to see good news selling a newspaper for a change!
Good Luck President Elect Obama.
