AuctionWally's email - Barack Obama autographed purse

November 23, 1:55 PM

A piece of American History
Michelle Obama's purse - signed by Barack

From the email of AuctionWally:

Heidi asks:

Hello - I purchased a "gently used" purse at an Alzheimer's auction last year.  Candidates were asked to have their wives send a "gently used purse" and to have her autograph it inside w/a check enclosed for the Alzheimer's Association.

Barack Obama submitted a purse that belonged to his wife - but, instead of her signing the purse on the inside - as instructed......he signed it on the outside...the purse is pretty used looking but it has his autograph..........I kept the newspaper article showing us holding our purchases....

How do I best protect this item - it's just been hanging in a closet and what is it's value.....thanks, Heidi

AW says: Wow, that's a great story. You have a significant piece of American history in my opinion. It is so relevant to the times with the economy being such an important issue.

To protect it, I would just make sure it's stored in a dry place, not in direct light as the autograph could fade. I think you should take steps to preserve and possibly frame the newspaper article. I'd use acid free backing and matting. If your not sure how to do this, I have a friend in the business who is an ephemera expert that can help.

His name is Cliff Aliperti, he just produced a video about framing ephemera, click here to contact Cliff.

Barack Obama's autograph right now is a hot item, but to have it  on a purse at a time when he is gearing up for massive economic reform is fantastic and would make this a red hot item. Another added value is that the purse belonged to Michelle Obama and it's well worn.

I hesitate to put a value on it because it is such a speculative piece, but I can tell that I would auction it if I were to sell it.

If I were forced to guess on how much this would sell for at auction, would blurt out $2000-$3000, but that is ONLY a wild guess.  Rarely do modern autographs achieve much more than a few hundred dollars, but the item you have and it's circumstances throw conventional wisdom out the window.

Don't forget to offer a guarantee of authenticity if you do decide to sell the purse, and PLEASE send me a link the auction if you decide to sell it. I would like to do a follow-up story.

Thanks for a very interesting email!

AW

While I cannot promise to answer all of the requests for information on collectibles that I receive, I will try to get to as many as possible. If yours is interesting enough, I'll publish it here!
