Should Baltimore Leaders Attend The Democratic Convention?

August 21, 9:08 AM

The 2008 Democratic National Convention is next week and quite a few Baltimore leaders will be in attendance. One Baltimore politician joked on his facebook page that he was prepared to be "the only elected Democrat left on the East Coast next week."

With Baltimore in such a fragile state should our leaders be worried about networking and politically positioning themselves in Denver? Most of our leaders represent very poor communities. Does it seem right for them to leave Baltimore for a work week to live it up in Denver?

I am basically questioning the entire set up of the political system in Baltimore. Since it is a one party system it puts leaders in a position to immediately think about moving up to a higher position once they win an election. It helps to network and have higher up connections within the Democratic Party if you want to move up in the ranks.

Maybe I am just an idealist but I think it would be nice if our leaders actually did their jobs instead of worrying about getting their photos taken with Obama.

You can see who was elected to go to the convention here, here, here, and here. Some Baltimore names that stick out are Jack Young, Cheryl Glenn, Maggie McIntosh, Lisa Gladden, Verna Jones, Catherine Pugh, Nathaniel McFadden, and Keiffer Mitchell. These are not the only locals going to the convention though. I am searching for the complete list but have been unsuccessful so far.
